Eligibility for MTech (Research) at IISc

Hi all. I am currently in my final year of a Bachelor's degree in Physics (3Y BSc program). I am interested in working in the field of Neuromorphic Computing, and have an ongoing research internship for the same. I aspire to take admission in IISC for my Master's, particularly in the NeuRonICS lab, which comes under the Department of Electronics Systems Engineering (DESE). I have read about it on the internet and visited their page, and to me it seems like the premier place in India working on this subject.

As per my knowledge, IISC takes in candidates for MTech programs through GATE. Now, the GATE website shows that candidates in the 3rd year of a 3Y BSc program (or with a completed degree) are eligible to appear for the exam. However, IISC's admission/programs website shows that a minimum of 4 years of bachelor's education is required (equivalent to a 4 year Bachelor of Science BS (Research) degree) for admission in MTech (Research) under DESE.

Currently, my institution doesn't offer a 4 year BSc but instead a 1 year MSc diploma, which would result in a 4 year Bachelors degree if i exit right after, instead of completing the full 2 year MSc. They have said that the final degree will bear the title of a 'Bachelor of Science in Physics'. Could someone please clear this query of mine? Also,

  1. For students and postodocs currently working in the NeuRonICS Lab, how's it? Is the work intriguing? Insights regarding Lab culture, opportunities etc. are appreciated!

  2. What about DESE in general? Funding structure, Grants, Scholarships available to students etc.

MTech (Research) @IISC Eligibility

Hi all. This is my very first post on this sub.

As per my knowledge, IISC takes in candidates for MTech programs through GATE. Now, the GATE website shows that candidates in the 3rd year of a 3Y BSc program (or with completed degree) are eligible to appear for the exam. However, IISC's admission/programs website shows that a minimum of 4 years of bachelor's education is required (equivalent to a 4 year Bachelor of Science (Research) degree) for admission in MTech (Research) under DESE.

They have said that the final degree will bear the title of a 'Bachelor of Science in Physics'. Could someone please clear this query of mine? Also,

  1. What is it like to transition from BSc to Mtech (those who have done it)? How feasible is it for someone interested in research?

  2. The syllabus for GATE Physics is really expansive. I will be preparing for JAM, JEST and TIFR-GS alongside, so how much does the preparation overlap between these examinations?

  3. Since the 4 year requirement question still persists, should I write GATE 2027? I will still appear for GATE 2028 in case the eligibility thing doesn't work out.

  4. And finally, please suggest preparatory material for mastering the core foundations of Physics (CM, EM, QM, SM, Electronics, AMO, NPh, et al)

Thank you!

Greetings, kind people of this subreddit. I am an outsider who will be visiting IIT Patna in the month of May for internship. My visit will last for about a month. I have never been to Patna before. I am aware of the intense heat in Northern India during this time of the year. How should I prepare myself before arrival? For example:

  1. what are the absolute must-haves? Essential items that I should bring with me which aren't available nearby (inside campus)
  2. How's the hostel? Condition of rooms, bathrooms etc. How to tackle the intense heat :-(
  3. Food options
  4. Laundry services
  5. Ways to socialize with other
  6. Other important things to look out for?

It's my first time traveling so far from home for such a duration. Please help a fellow out.
