Commis in food tasting for small restaurant.

I got a job as commis and I am involved during food tasting and R&D. What should I expect or prepare? What do you usually do?

International student looking for culinary schools in Spain (2 years max, under €20k total) + part-time work advice

Hey everyone, I’m from the Philippines and currently researching culinary schools in Spain. I already have around 10 months of Cookery NCII/vocational training plus almost 2 years of experience working in a buffet kitchen as a Chef de Partie.

I’m trying to find schools/programs that fit these conditions:

  • International student friendly
  • Culinary / kitchen management / gastronomy related
  • Around 2 years or less
  • Total tuition under €20,000 if possible
  • Preferably in Madrid, Valencia, Málaga, Barcelona or other student-friendly cities
  • Programs taught in English OR mixed English/Spanish
  • Schools that actually help with internships or industry connections
  • I’m also trying to understand the reality of student life there.

Questions:

  1. Realistic life as a student while doing part-time work?
  2. How hard is it to find kitchen jobs for international students?
  3. Which cities are best for balancing:
    • affordable rent
    • restaurant opportunities
    • safety
    • transportation
  4. Are private culinary schools worth it, or should I look at public hospitality/vocational schools instead?
  5. For people already in Spain: how much money did you realistically spend monthly as a student?
  6. Did your school actually help you get internships/jobs, or were you mostly on your own?

I’ve been looking into schools like:

  1. MOM Culinary Institute - Does'nt know their tuition
  2. Le Cordon Bleu Madrid - expensive
  3. Barcelona Culinary Hub - vocational
  4. Basque Culinary Center

But I’m still comparing tuition, visa situation, and work opportunities.

I’d really appreciate honest advice, especially from:

  • International students
  • Filipinos in Spain
  • Culinary students/graduates
  • People working in restaurants/hospitality there

Thank you guys!
