Korea is a dystopian nightmare ruled by mega corporations, it's a country 1/3 the size of California, it's literally one big city and a handful of small cities and it's controlled by family-run megacorporations. You get one chance, ONE chance in your life to get into a good enough university for the opportunity to beg Nexon for a position as middle manager, and then that's your lot in life for the rest of your life. These companies have undue influence over politicians, laws, courts, and industry. A Korean game developer pisses off Nexon he's toast. It's a tiny country. You just pissed off the corporate overlords, your career is now on the verge of toast.
SDF is guilty of what exactly? You guys follow the news (second hand through influencers) but think for yourselves. He was working on a project for Nexon that was going to be a battle royale and it wasn't working. He had a crazy idea about a hardcore super spicy fantasy tarkov version of this game BUT he is the salary-slave of the megacorp Nexon and he must do what Nexon says even if it means the world will never get to see a game that a particular niche of gamers are hungry for.
Because who would give up a good, stable career at THE gaming company of the entire country AND make them your ENEMY just to make a hardcore niche pvp video game?
Only the glorious bastard SDF himself, that's who. Is he perfect? No. Was Alexander the Great perfect? No. But perfect people don't do what these nutjobs do.
So you're mad SDF is saying insane things and doing insane things. What did you expect?
What did the court in Korea find? SDF NOT GUILTY of stealing intellectual property. The game SDF built outside of Nexon was fundamentally a different game than the one he worked on at Nexon. One is a battle royale with no persistence gameplay elements outside the raid. Other is a semi-persistent Tarkov style wipe based extraction game where players accumulate valuable items outside the raid.
What WAS he found guilty of? SDF GUILTY of stealing "trade secrets" aka Nexon's way of developing a game (team structure, management practices, role assignment, task management, etc.). AKA turns out there's no evidence of out and out theft or criminal conduct, BUT Nexon needs to punish SDF to maintain discipline among its hundreds of other employees who might get ideas, so the court accepts a flimsy argument from Nexon's lawyers to find SDF guilty of "something."
Wow such a terrible crime.
One more thing. The development team that came with SDF when he took the seed of this game from Nexon out into the wild knew exactly what could happen to them. But they followed SDF out anyway. These guys took a huge, wild, extremely underdog gamble and there is a reason why despite SDF being a schizo they followed him into the dangerous unknown. You guys think SDF and Terry and Paul have some secret drama beef going on behind their backs but they are probably a band of brothers at this point that got nothing but each other and the company they built. It's either make this work or live in a 3x6 feet room working below minimum wage at a corner market cashier.
Game was boring. SDF's right that it was the product of too many compromises. He threw his LIFE away to get this game to us brother. He's literally the Edward Snowden of hardcore video game community. Promethus bringing fire to man and suffering to do it.
