I built Sleep Ledger, an app that tracks your sleep debt

How it works. You set your target sleep duration. Sleep less than that, and a debt builds up.

To calculate it, I built a model based on three scientific sources: two studies and one set of recommendations.

-Van Dongen et al. The cumulative cost of additional wakefulness. Sleep 2003.
-Windred et al. Sleep regularity is a stronger predictor of mortality risk than sleep duration. Sleep 2024.
-National Sleep Foundation, 2015.

Example: you need 8h, you sleep 6h, you owe 2h. Same again the next night: you owe 3:55.

The formula: Dₙ = λ·Dₙ₋₁ + max(0, N − Sₙ) − η·max(0, Sₙ − N)
Dₙ ∈ [0, 80] λ = 0,9667 η = 0,5

where N is your sleep need, Sₙ how long you slept on night n, and Dₙ your debt that morning.max(0, N − Sₙ) : what you're short of gets added.

− η·max(0, Sₙ − N) with η = 0.5 : what you sleep beyond your need only counts half. Night 3, you sleep 10h — 2h more than you need: your debt drops by 1h, not 2h. That's Van Dongen: after two weeks of short nights, three good nights aren't enough to get back to baseline.

λ·Dₙ₋₁ with λ = 0.9667 : only 96.67% of yesterday's debt carries over. Time erases it on its own. The half-life works out to 20.5 nights and the model's reach to 30 nights: the number tells you where you stand over the past month, not what you did last night.

The screens

Debt : your debt in hours, the background color tracks it
Last night : how long you slept and what's missing from your need
Detail : deep, light, REM, awakenings
Trend : how much the balance moved over 7 days
Regularity : how stable your bedtimes are, plus your weekend shift (This screen exists because of Windred: across 60 977 participants, sleep regularity predicted mortality better than sleep duration).
History : a night-by-night ledger, 8 weeks

Interface in 10 languages.

Everything stays on the watch : no account, no companion app, no network permission. appId: 1114652

My mea culpa on the Balance 3

I have to make my mea culpa. At first I hated the design of the Balance 3. But after seeing it so much on people's wrists in the community (thanks for your photos !), I’m really starting to like it. In my opinion, its only real flaw is the size, the diameter is a bit too large. That said, it looks and feels genuinely premium. It's a great choice for a daily watch, easy to wear with a smart outfit while still handling sports sessions without a hitch.

Same story for the Active 2. I saw it in person at Decathlon (in France) and was honestly surprised by the finish and design. I completely get now why people are still buying it, despite the lack of new software updates. Plus it looks particularly good on women's wrists.

I built Ghost Pace: race your own ghost during a workout. Now on the Zepp store

You set up your ghost from the app — distance, pace — and it gives you your target time. You can also set nothing at all and let it take your best session: the app keeps your record automatically.

Then you start your workout as usual: run, walk, ride... The ghost lives in a data page that you have to enable once in the activity settings, then you swipe across to the Ghost Pace page. No second GPS track, no battery burned twice.

While you're running there's just one number to read: how far ahead of or behind the ghost you are, in seconds (or minutes). Green when you're ahead, red when you're behind. Below it your pace, your distance, your time, and your heart rate with a five-zone arc.

Your sessions are saved in a history (includes a storage indicator).

Settings: average or current pace, buzz when the gap opens up, and max heart rate to set the five zone limits.

6 languages, 3 colours (Lime, Blue or Mauve).

Completely free, for round watches.

Cheetah 2 Ultra vs Coros Apex 4 & HRM 600 + FR970

Test on the exact same run, wearing each watch on a different wrist and recording the reference heart rate with a Garmin HRM 600 chest strap on a Forerunner 970.

Amazfit Cheetah 2 Ultra (the watch built for trail and ultra-trail)
COROS APEX 4 (perfect for mountain, trail, and hiking)

The accuracy of the optical sensor on both watches is top-notch !
Average and max heart rates are virtually identical, and the HR tracking stays completely true to the reference strap !

Josh Kerr's impressive performance

Kerr averaged a HR of 188 BPM and hit nearly perfect 200m splits en route to his 3:42.66 Mile World Record on Sunday. His stride length maxed out at 7.25 ft. All in, these factors led to a new Mile World Record.

Daily Training Load directly from the watch

I would like to submit a feature request for Zepp OS. Would it be possible to integrate the Daily Training Load as a widget or shortcut card directly on the watch ? Just like it is already done for the other main metrics.

This is a metric I use on a daily basis to set a performance target, in combination with PAI.

Barometric altimeter accuracy test: Cheetah 2 Pro, T-Rex 3 Pro vs Garmin FR9790

On this first run, automatic calibration took 3 minutes for the Amazfit T-Rex 3 Pro, but did not happen for the Cheetah 2 Pro (the IGN map indicates a peak of 254 m). However, the gap is relatively small, around ten meters.

https://preview.redd.it/9pff6l1np0eh1.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=01d118854562d0d0e333a118d7330f8f05841e50

On this other run, calibration completed correctly shortly after the start, and the measurements are very good.

https://preview.redd.it/nw8hdz6yp0eh1.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=31e61de280dddb2c159ef19e5dbd176606434a28

Run with FR970, Coros Apex 4 and Cheetah 2 Pro:

The automatic calibration of Amazfit watches (Cheetah 2 Pro and Cheetah 2 Ultra) takes place gradually over 30 minutes. It is interesting to see that, on this section, the GPS altitude measured by the Forerunner 70, which lacks a barometric altimeter, is more accurate:

The elevation gain, on the other hand, is overestimated in all my runs. Differences regularly reach about 9% regardless of the type of terrain.

Optical heart rate accuracy test: Cheetah 2 Pro/Ultra, T-Rex 3 Pro vs Garmin HRM 600

Power walking with elevation gain:

Cheetah 2 Pro left wrist, T-Rex 3 Pro right wrist

https://preview.redd.it/z1qfdsh4k0eh1.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=064ecdad52c2efd08dd89255ad4150e2a8aeda25

The T-Rex 3 Pro measurements are a bit less accurate. Sometimes they are lagging.

Running with intervals:

Cheetah 2 Pro left wrist, Cheetah 2 Ultra right wrist

https://preview.redd.it/65rs0jdel0eh1.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=99923266d4782d6af0e2b983331490e9ba942cc3

Please note that testing the accuracy of an optical heart rate monitor is quite tricky, as measurements can vary greatly from one individual to another depending on skin type and color, body hair, outdoor temperature, the type of sport practiced, and other parameters.

The truths (and lies) about our GPS watches, explained by a Sports watch tester

FOR HEART RATE

"The wrist-based sensor is garbage": I'm going to say false. I agree that for sports use with high intensity, pace variations, etc., it is still not as good as a chest strap, that is true.

Compared to a chest strap, you wear your watch's optical heart rate sensor 24/7. As a result, it provides you with a whole host of other data: your resting heart rate in the morning, your heart rate variability... So it remains useful.

"My watch displays 198 beats per minute for my max heart rate, it can't be that high according to the 220 - age formula": This is false. The 220 - age formula is purely statistical. It is an average based on the non-athletic population. Consequently, some people are above it, some are below it, and some are right around that value.

If you reach 198 beats per minute during a workout, a hill session, or a 10k, then your max heart rate is probably 198 beats per minute, even if you only hit it once. That said, you still need to be sure about the reliability of the measurement; it is preferable to use a chest strap.

"If the heart rate sensor isn't working well, it's because it isn't wet enough": This is completely false. This is true for a chest strap, but absolutely false for an optical heart rate sensor. In the case of a chest strap, the electrodes placed on your chest measure the electrical impulses of the heart. Therefore, you need electrical conduction.

An optical heart rate sensor broadcasts light and measures the reflected light. There is absolutely no reason why it would need to be wet. In fact, I would say the opposite: during swimming, as soon as water slips between the skin and the watch, the readings become catastrophic.

The truths (and lies) about our GPS watches, explained by a Sports watch tester

FOR THE GPS

"An expensive GPS watch is necessarily more accurate": This is false. Brands generally use the same GPS chip across their entire range of GPS watches. That said, there can still be differences from one model to another, but not necessarily to the advantage of a more expensive watch. This is because the GPS chip isn't everything. GPS accuracy also depends on the GPS antenna and how that antenna is integrated into the watch case.

However, there are still a few minor exceptions involving software throttling. This is what Garmin does with the Forerunner 70, for example. There is no technical reason why the Forerunner 70 shouldn't be capable of dual-frequency multi-GNSS; it is simply a choice by Garmin to limit the device.

"Galileo is accurate to the nearest meter": This is false. While it is true that the Galileo positioning constellation can deliver a service accurate to the nearest meter, this service is paid. Consequently, neither your GPS watch brand nor you are paying for this service. Your GPS watch therefore uses the standard service, which has an accuracy roughly similar to GPS, meaning about 3 meters.

"Dual-frequency mode is always better": This is true, up to a point.** Dual-frequency mode helps in difficult terrain, particularly in cities and mountains. That said, when you run in open fields with absolutely nothing obstructing GPS signal reception, dual-frequency will not perform any better than single-frequency.

"A GPS watch is more accurate than a smartphone": This is false. Smartphones transitioned to dual-frequency multi-GNSS several years before GPS watches did. Furthermore, because they have a larger body, they can accommodate a larger GPS antenna. Of course, this depends on usage: if you put your smartphone in a bag with gear piled on top of it, that will obviously degrade GPS signal reception. Reception will be better on a watch worn in the open.

"A GPS watch takes longer to acquire a GPS signal in a race starting corral because of the crowd": This is completely false. The GPS signal is a radio broadcast. It is exactly like having a radio receiver to listen to a station. Even if you are in the middle of a city with thousands of radios around, reception does not depend on the number of receivers. The transmitter, in this case, the satellite, broadcasts its signal, and whether there is one GPS watch or 10,000 GPS watches on Earth, they will all receive the exact same signal.
