Work Trial

Had some great first round interviews with growing startups. They all seem like great people and great opportunities. I’m just confused why startups are so high on work trials. I understand you get a feel for the team, and they get to see if you can actually do the work. However, I don’t understand why they expect you to pay for your own flight to the work trial, especially if they have such good funding behind them. I want to pursue these opportunities, but I’d have to do a work trial in person and pay for my own flights. What do you all think?

Corgi AI Insurance

Can anybody at Corgi or who knows them at all tell me why nobody has an ounce of an insurance background at the company? I can’t seem to find one person who has been a professional in the industry, and they’re selling an insurance product and issuing policies. I get it’s AI doing all the insurance work but Corgi's disclaimers acknowledge using "artificial intelligence, machine learning, algorithms, and other automated tools" in underwriting and pricing with "human oversight."
The question is: whose oversight? With what credentials? Reviewing what volume of decisions at what frequency? In a 100-person company founded two years ago, the honest answer is: probably none. What oversight if everybody is young and doesn’t understand insurance. There’s a reason insurance companies don’t operate “full stack”. They also operate as an RRG that’s not even A rated, so who the hell would buy??? Insurance is an industry where your errors don't show up for years. When you write a D&O policy today, the claim that tests your underwriting assumptions might not arrive until 2031. By then, you may have written thousands more policies on the same flawed model. Uh oh.

Work Trial

Had a great first round interview. They want me to fly down and meet their team for a work trial. However, the flight down for the work trial is not comped They want me to fly down this week but flights are $1,000, and I’m not even sure I’d get the offer because it requires 5 booked meetings in a day for a product I’d have to learn on the spot. I’ve been in sales for a year and understand how to cold call and book meetings over the phone. I know I can do the job, but just seems sketch to pay for my own flight to an interview, just for it to be a what if and potentially not get hired. The company is growing fast and it feels like a great opportunity. Not sure what to do…
