Hello Reddit, have a question about a 3406e
Ok, so about two years ago my boss and i picked up a i think its an 01 ocean yacht with 2 3406e engines 800hp I'm not a diesel tech but find my way around with some time usually
So it started smoking like a year later i find that the turbo shaft was leaking oil into the intake i swapped in a new turbo everything has been fine this year i think maybe another 2 years since the turbo install it has started to smoke again I'm not sure where to start now as I know it can be a few things i don't have a computer to read data from ecu what are some things i should check the engine seems to run good even with the smoke the gauges i can scroll though and see a few engine details but everything is mostly the same and one or two which i cant tell what temps are what because it just says gauge 1 gauge 2 ..3..4..and 5 the ones that are some what different temps are only higher by maybe 2 degrees, I'm not sure of oil consumption yet and will look into it once he starts using the boat for the season same for fuel consumption
I also would like to add that I did new aftercoolers, updated ones and your supposed to change the intake housing because the inlet outlet of the coolers are bigger than the originals but what i did was just take the sleeves and intake housing to the machine shop and had them open the part of the intake where the sleeves go in to fit that has been fine as well i think i did this around the same time as the new turbo it saved a lot of money. so i would like to know what should i really be looking for with this engine if it was consuming oil passed rings wouldn't i have a lot of blow-by I'm not sure how many hours these engines have i know it says over 4k hours but the guy he bought the boat from says he had them rebuilt at some point id have to ask how many hours how would i go about checking the injectors ? is it an easy task thanks for any input and sorry for the rambling and all over the place as stuff starts to pop into my head as im typing
