For context I have a BSc in Computing & Games Development which I achieved in 2017 only 9 years old now. I tried applying back in the day for software development didn't go well, so I then went home and went into lifeguarding for 6 years whilst working on my own start up projects then moved onto retail where I currently am, doing certifications to build up my IT knowledge (A+ & now studying Network +) and push myself into IT help desk / Networking I applied to the local college for their Level 4 Network engineering high apprenticeship course, the next day I received an email from their admissions team inviting me for a evening interview 2 weeks later. Today on the morning of the interview date I received a call saying because I did a level 6 qualification (degree) I wouldn't be eligible for the course due to funding.
And I'm like wtf why are you telling me on the day of the interview when clearly I've met the criteria had an interview lined up an advisor has called me to confirm interview times and now you tell me that the degree I did 9 years ago that doesn't offer the same skillset as this apprenticeship course makes me ineligible for the course.
It's just a massive kick on the teeth, I went for the apprenticeship because jobs require me to get experience and I can't get the experience because I'm apparently overqualified in a field that bares no relevance to the field I'm applying for a apprenticeship in.
Update:
I shortly sent them an email at 10am basically in summary that my Degree was primarily focused on Software development and had no material on Networking, Infrastructure or IT support and that the apprenticeship I was applying to had a specialised skillset that I did not current process or have any formal qualifications regarding, 3.5 hours later I got a phone call from the same person who rang me in the morning, to say they didn't realise that the degree I had done had no material on networking, and as such they've reinstated my interview for later this evening.
So I'm glad at the least I challenged the decision and as a result, got the interview reinstated, now granted they could still say no at the end of the day, but at least I didn't lose out completely.
2nd Update: Went to the interview and within 15 minutes the interviewer said they were awarding me a conditional offer for the course provided I get an employer to sponsor me.
Which is what I was aiming for in the first place.
Now 1 more step remains before I can begin my apprenticeship.
