This is something that has been on my mind for a bit, and it came out this morning in a post on the EV sub. Someone posted that they were exited to get a Buzz and immediately a bunch of skeptics piled on about how horrible it is (despite a comment that it’s hard to find a used one because owners love them - ha). Low range, too expensive, can’t road trip. You know the litany. I’ve had mine for over a year, I know they are misinformed. You have to look at it through a different lens to understand why.
Here is the thing that most people slagging on the Buzz don’t understand. It’s very similar to when the iPhone was released. It wasn’t the best mobile phone, it wasn’t the best email client, and it wasn’t the best browser. But it WAS all three at the same time. People who hadn’t tried one sneered that without a physical keyboard it was useless. And they complained about the price. Because buying one device for less than half the price of three devices was somehow a bad deal…
Then it took over the world and made Apple the dominant force it is today. Kia will likely be the Buzz’s Android, and that competition will be a good thing.*
The Buzz is hands down the most practical and versatile vehicle I have ever owned because it does so many things. I can haul the whole family around, fit full sized sheets of plywood easily, it drives beautifully and powerfully, and I camp comfortably in it. It’s electric and gets me further down the road than my bladder can take on road trips.
The complete package is what makes it worth it. Is it the best EV? No. Is it the best pick up truck? No. Is it the best 6-7 seater family van? Maybe. Does it have more room than most luxury SUVs? Yup. Does it do all of those things - definitively yes! It even has those annoying touch capacitive pads instead of real buttons (keyboards..).
It isn’t the vehicle for everyone, and if thats you don’t buy one, but for many of us it is a great fit for a wide range of use cases. As someone who can only afford one vehicle at a time the premium is worth it for the flexibility.
* For clarity, I do not think electric vans will have the same impact as the smart phone, the analogy only goes so far.
