I'm planning to move to Birmingham and am currently apartment hunting. My work office is fairly central, so I'm trying to figure out which parts of the city are considered safer to rent in for a woman living alone.

I know Birmingham's overall crime rate is high, and I'm particularly concerned about violent and sexual crime rather than things like theft or antisocial behaviour. Which areas would you recommend looking at, and are there any areas you'd suggest avoiding?
