Cheerwine Festival

My family and I went to Cheerwine Festival yesterday and had a really good time. We live almost four hours away, so this was only the second time I made the effort to attend--the first time was four years ago, and it has grown quite a bit since then. It could use a few more activities, perhaps, but the big draw is the vendors selling food and drink (along with the Cheerwine merchandise).

I love the idea of a festival devoted to a regional soda, so I was considering whether another one could be so successful, and ultimately decided that it's unlikely (with the possible exception being a Dr. Pepper festival in Texas, maybe?). Cheerwine is so beloved across North Carolina, but also has a distinct flavor, and one that also lends itself to being an ingredient in other foods and drinks, though honestly, as I was eating and drinking the various things for sale, I was wondering how many of them just added cherry syrup to their recipes and called it Cheerwine-flavored. I love Ale-8, and it is just as beloved in Kentucky, so I can imagine crowds showing up to celebrate it, but it would be harder to sell Ale-8-flavored goods.

From “Lollapalooza: The Uncensored Story of Alternative Rock’s Wildest Festival”.

And one additional quote from Robin Guthrie:
To this day, it’s one of those great things I like to occasionally drop into conversation with young people. “I remember that time with Cocteau Twins where I was playing with Metallica…”
