Rio Morales

I was rewatching The Spiderman Within recently and noticed a potential connection to how the upcoming movie might end. While this short film was primarily made to highlight Miles' mental health and panic attacks it might also contain a subconscious foreshadowing of his mother's death. Regarding the shadow monster from his sleep paralysis, the giant spider shape seems to symbolize deep-seated guilt rather than just being a visual choice. Subconsciously, Miles likely feels that his bite is the root cause of the current danger. Because he became Spider-Man, The Spot is now hunting his family and the nightmare reflects that realization. Another notable detail is the absence of his mother. During the entire nightmare sequence and its aftermath, Rio is completely missing. When Miles snaps out of the paralysis, he does not seek comfort from her. Instead, he leaves the room for a late-night walk with Jefferson. In ATSV, Miles insists he can save both his father and the multiverse. However, this short film might be hinting that saving everyone is impossible. My theory is that in BTSV, Miles will successfully alter the canon to protect Jefferson, but due to the universe demanding balance, Rio will die instead. This outcome would align with the Ultimate Marvel comics source material. Through this lens, Miles walking with his father at the end takes on a different meaning. His subconscious might already be clinging to the parent he can save, while implicitly mourning the absence of his mother.

Of course, it is understandable that this theory might be a bit of a stretch. The entire core theme of the Spider-Verse trilogy explicitly tells us that you can change anything, even destiny itself, and write your own story. But looking at the short film from this alternative angle is still an interesting thought experiment. What do you guys think?
