eBay Wrongfully Charging Kansas Sales Tax on Bullion Purchases — Anyone Else Having This Problem?
I’m curious whether other Kansas buyers are dealing with eBay improperly charging sales tax on bullion purchases that appear exempt under Kansas law.
Kansas provides a sales tax exemption for qualifying gold, silver, platinum, and palladium bullion, yet eBay continues assessing sales tax on transactions that appear to clearly qualify for the exemption. Even more frustrating, customer service representatives acknowledge the issue, open service requests, and in some cases promise refunds or follow-up contact — but then fail to follow through.
In my experience:
• eBay assessed sales tax on qualifying bullion purchases shipped to Kansas
• Multiple customer service requests were opened
• Representatives stated refunds or escalations would occur
• Promised follow-ups either never happened or communications became inconsistent and unprofessional
• The issue remains unresolved despite repeated efforts
This does not appear to be an isolated incident, and it raises concerns regarding:
eBay’s compliance with Kansas tax exemption laws for bullion
Whether eBay is properly coding bullion transactions for exempt states
The lack of accountability and follow-through in customer service handling
Has anyone else in Kansas or other exempt states experienced this issue with eBay bullion purchases? Were you eventually able to obtain a refund, chargeback, or tax correction?
Interested to hear whether others are seeing the same pattern.
