Little bit of a rant here. I had a final paper for one of my courses this semester. One of the requirements was to turn in the paper with the version history on, which I did. I turned it in, and the next day started getting comments on my paper. Some corrections and comments were just missing commas or incorrectly written citations, but others were entirely highlighted sections with an “AI overview” response saying I used AI to write my paper. The information I used came directly from the lecture. A lot of sections she asked where I got the information from, I replied saying it was from my notes from HER lectures. She replied to me and I ended up having to add more lecture citations to my paper, whatever. Then we I got an announcement notification on canvas saying how disappointed the professor was that she was dealing with students using AI to write their papers and it’s going to follow the academic integrity policy which says to give students an F who fabricated their work. I emailed her that I fixed all of my citations and she said she will look at it tomorrow. I just don’t understand how she thinks my work is AI when you can clearly see in the version history that I worked on this paper during many different days at different times. Like what was the point of having the version history requirement if you’re just going to accuse me anyways?
The reason this makes me so livid is because earlier in the semester, we had to read a book and write discussion posts about it. When we did that, may students used AI for their posts and she sent out an announcement saying things like not to use AI and that she will give students a second chance. It happened again, she sent out another announcement saying again, how she’s disappointed in her students, and along with it was a google form. The form had two options. One answer said
Selection 1) I use AI for my writing, and I do not want to continue on the writing track for this class. (meaning having to write the remaining discussion posts and the final paper)
Selection 2) I don’t use AI for my writing, and I want to continue on the writing track. (Write the discussion posts and write the final paper)
So, I picked the second one because I did not want to say I used AI when I did not (but I also didn’t want to have to write the final paper.)
So now, the students who used AI on multiple occasions and got caught doing it got off the hook of attending certain classes and also did not have to write a final paper (or do any of the other work for it)
It just really grinds my gears because why did the professor give these students who used AI after being warned twice, get off the hook for assignments and also not get punished? But now when she suspects students are using AI it’s ‘This is unacceptable! I will be following the punishments of the academic integrity code’
Sorry this is long, I can’t stop thinking about it because of how angry and anxious it’s making me.
I also wish she had some positive comments about my paper, I spent a lot of time on it and all she did was write corrections. :/
