Help: Air India is asking me to pay for web checkin to ensure I'm not overbooked?
Travelling to colombo via Delhi, however I am unable to do online check-in on NAG-DEL flight without selecting a paid seat, tried with Air India's customer care and they apparently want me to pay for a seat in order to ensure that I would be allowed to board the flight, in case it is overbooked. However I can see 51 paid seats still avaible (16 hours before flight time), so overbooking looks sketchy to me.
I'm travelling for an important event that cannot be missed at any cost, so I was wondering if it is worth to pay 625 rupees for the cheapest seat that is available. Or is Air india staff just trying to make me pay for a seat, considering that 51 seats are still unbooked, and I would get one even if I go to the airport an hour early.
