hi!! i’m a high school senior and I feel completely stuck right now trying to decide both what to major in and which school to go to.
i’m mainly choosing between Montclair State and Quinnipiac, but honestly the bigger issue is that I don’t even feel 100% confident in my major.
Here’s where I’m at:
What I want in a career:
- High salary (ideally 100k+ eventually)
- Good ROI (I don’t want to be in a ton of debt)
- Structured work with clear expectations (not super creative/abstract)
- Not constant social interaction all day
- Good work-life balance / possibly remote work
- no AI takeover (important to me)
- I like the idea of helping people (especially kids), but not in an overwhelming way
Majors I’m considering:
Accounting (maybe with an info systems minor)
Information Systems / tech
Some kind of healthcare path (like health info, medical coding, neuro-related tech — but not super patient-heavy)
My dilemma:
Montclair is about $12k/year for me
Quinnipiac is about $28k/year
Montclair is way cheaper → better financially
Quinnipiac seems like a nicer campus / “better experience” (from what I’ve seen)
I don’t know if paying more is actually worth it in the long run, especially if I go into something like accounting
What I’m worried about:
- Picking a major that I end up hating
- Choosing a school and regretting it because of cost or opportunities
- Missing out on better job prospects depending on where I go
If you were in my position:
- Would you prioritize cheaper school vs better experience?
- Which of these majors actually fits what I’m looking for?
- Is combining something like accounting + info systems a smart move?
I’d really appreciate honest advice, especially from people in these fields or who had to make a similar decision. I feel like I’m deciding my whole future right now and it’s kind of overwhelming.
