Incoming grad student — how hard is it to find an on-campus job at UMass?

Hi! I’m an incoming MS CS student starting at UMass this fall and I’m looking for an on-campus job.

For students who’ve gone through this before, how difficult is it to actually get one, especially during the first semester?

Where should I be looking/applying? I’ve seen the UMass job listings, but I’m wondering if there are other places or departments I should check as well.

Also curious about:

* When most fall jobs start getting posted
* Whether it’s already late to start applying
* Which campus jobs usually have the most openings
* Whether walking into places like dining halls, libraries, rec center, etc. and asking helps
* Any CS/IT-related student jobs that might be worth looking into
* Roughly how many hours students usually work per week
* Any tips that helped you actually land a job

Would really appreciate hearing from current or former students about what worked for you. Thanks!

Incoming MS CS student - Course recommendations for the first semester?

Hi everyone! I’m an incoming MS CS student at UMass Amherst for Fall 2026 and am currently deciding which courses to take during my first semester.

I’d appreciate recommendations on:

Good courses for incoming MS students
Courses or professors you had a particularly good experience with
A manageable combination of three courses
Courses that are especially useful for building a strong foundation for research or future PhD applications
Any courses that are better taken in a later semester

I’m currently exploring areas such as machine learning, systems, theory, and quantum computing, but I’m open to other suggestions as well.

Thanks!

Looking for Off-Campus Accommodation for 2026–27 Academic Year

Hi everyone, I’m looking for off-campus accommodation for the 2026–27 academic year near UMass Amherst.

I’m looking for a private room or shared apartment/house, ideally in the $700–900/month range. I’m trying to understand what options are available, so I’d appreciate any leads or advice.

A few questions:
• Are there places in this budget that are close to campus?
• Which areas are best if I want to be on or near a bus route?
• Is $700–900 realistic for a private room near UMass?

Please comment or DM me if you have any leads or suggestions. Thanks!
