Finding grade error after Professor's deadline

My Chem 112 Professor posted "All grade requests should be submitted before 5:00 PM on Tuesday, May 19." during which I was heading home on a 30 hour trip back to my country for the holidays. I had a C- for the course which I was relieved by since that meant I will be able to retake the course next semester but today when I rechecked the grades it was a 73 - a C. I was so confused and even recalculated several times with the course's own excel formula and it's still a C-. The grade was off by 5 whole points.

I'm worried about the statement the professor made even though according to the academic calendar the deadline for final grades is the 21st at midnight. If I'm denied of my true grade do I have grounds to make a dispute? What is the process of this? I already emailed the professor and I'm aware that the time right now is 3am on the 21st.

Transferring from UMass Amherst CS to UW Seattle Informatics — worth it?

I'm a freshman (sophomore from this fall) at UMass Amherst studying CS, Statistics, and Data Science and considering transferring to UW Seattle's Informatics program. I'm an international student from India, currently doing ML research at 2 labs in the university, on the quant arm of one of the investment funds on campus, and honors.

My interests lean heavily toward AI/ML, NLP, and quant finance rather than traditional SWE, which is part of why Informatics' applied, interdisciplinary angle appeals to me over a straight CS path. UW's proximity to the Seattle tech ecosystem and its pipelines into big tech are also a big draw. I'm also exploring the possibility of double majoring in Informatics and UW CS — though I know UW CS is a competitive internal addition with only around a 30–40% acceptance rate even for current UW students, so that's not guaranteed.

That said, I'm not sure the switch makes sense. UMass CS is a solid program, I've already built meaningful research experience and extracurriculars here, and it will be a huge social change for me aswell.

Has anyone gone through UW Informatics, especially with a quant/ML/data focus? Has anyone attempted the Informatics + CS double major, is it realistic given how selective CS admissions are internally? Or transferred from a similarly ranked program and felt it was or wasn't worth it? What would you weigh here?

Hi everyone,

You are recommended to take part in the 'AI Use in College Learning Survey.' This study will help us learn more about the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in your college learning process and the role that these tools shape your academic experiences.

This research is being conducted with a professor in Ocean County College.

This survey is voluntary; if you decide to take part in this survey, you will be asked to answer eighteen (18) questions (17 multiple-choice questions and one short response question), which will take around 10-15 minutes to complete.

You can find the survey here:

- By clicking this link AI Use in College Learning Survey, to access it directly.

- By copying and pasting this URL https://forms.gle/ZubsCJabNRVLpVhA7.

If you are not currently enrolled in any college or university, then you are not advised to take part in this survey. Nevertheless, you are encouraged to share this survey with an eligible respondent.

Before responding here are some important things to note before attempting the survey.

The questions included will be related to:

  • Your academic background (only includes your age group, academic level, and area of study)
  • Frequency of AI tools used and which tools you use
  • Uses of AI in your academic studies
  • Your opinions about the use of AI tools in learning and academic achievements
  • View about academic integrity and concerns related with the use of AI tools

Please note that:

  • All data you provided will be kept confidential and will not identify you in any way.
  • Only information related to your age, academic level, and your major will be collected.
  • Information including your email, name, gender, where you study, and other sensitive information will not be collected.
  • The software 'Google Forms' will require you to sign in for you to complete the survey; we will not collect your email addresses.
  • You have the option to skip certain questions and leave the survey at any time you want, and there will be no consequences for you if you decide not to answer the questions.
  • You will not be entered into any draws for prizes. There is no financial incentive to complete this survey.

We appreciate your time and cooperation.

Regards,

A student from Ocean County College

Franklin DC renovation and addition

Hey guys. We know about the April fools joke about Franklin DC closing, but this is serious. I saw the UMass system 2026-2030 capital plan notes that Franklin DC will be renovated and expanded. They will most likely keep the old looks on the outside with a renovated interior and expanded seating and potentially new options to eat. What you want to see?

Here is my ideas

  1. Upgraded stir fry station for woks in Frank
  2. A upgraded deli, which allows for both cold and hot sandwiches and possibility for more protein and topping options, as well as equipment and menu items like in deli delish in campus center
  3. An upgraded Jewish station with a possibility of a Jewish deli so Jewish and non Jewish students can have pastrami on rye on campus and other Jewish selections
  4. A noodle bowl that can compete well against other dining halls with possible Frank’s exclusives
  5. Upgraded hard serve ice cream bar with more ice cream options
  6. An upgraded grab and go, which further increase the capacity and shorter wait times for the lunch rush

What you all want? LMK and let’s hope the old structure doesn’t get torn down as Frank is a legend!

Can someone live in Leach tell me how bad it actually is? Too small? Roaches?

Also, How's the engineering better decision RAP?

Is Southwest significantly better in dorm conditions? How many minutes of walk is it from the gym, the cafeteria, and engineering buildings?

I wanna hear your personal experience. Thank you sm

Thoughts on BDIC program?

I'm currently contemplating leaving my primary major (which I like, but I'm not doing as well in it as I'd like) to create a BDIC program focused on supply chain operations, sustainability, and ethics. I've been interested in this for a while but haven't had much opportunity to explore it within my major. I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not though and I'd like to hear from people familiar with the BDIC program.

Location of the former Amherst Drug Lab?

Greetings and felicitations. Where specifically was the Amherst Drug Lab, which was the center of the scandal involving Sonja Farak? I assume it was somewhere in Goessmann, but I can't determine where, and Farak was apparently hired after the last of the paper Faculty and Staff Telephone Directories were published in 2005. (At least I assume that that was the last edition. The last student phone book I have is the fall 2009–2010 edition.)

ANNOUNCEMENT FOR INCOMING CICS STUDENTS!!

Hi all, I’m one of the mentors for the FIERCE RAP for the upcoming school year!

If you’re an incoming CS or Informatics student at UMass, definitely look into joining the FIERCE RAP (Fostering Inclusion by Engaging in Real-world Computing Education). It’s a year-long residential academic program through the Manning CICS.

You’ll live with a small group of other freshmen CICS students, get mentoring from upperclassmen, tutoring, networking opportunities, and special access to trips/outings throughout the year. FIERCE is also the only RAP that does overnight trips, including visits to Boston tech companies like Akamai Technologies and MathWorks.

Another huge perk is the free early move-in through the Summer Bridge program, which makes the transition to campus way easier and helps you meet people before the semester starts!

Requirements: be a part of CICS & rank FIERCE as your #1 choice on the RAP lottery list (opens tomorrow at 9 am!) We will have an info session this summer, but please DM or comment with any questions!

Links:

Our instagram (@cics_fierce)

Our website

More info about RAPs at UMass

TLDR: join the this tight-knit community for first-year CICS students to make friends, join weekly events, and get mentoring from upperclassmen (RAP lottery opens tomorrow @ 9AM)

Chances of getting in?

Hey everyone I just recently toured UMass Amherst and loved it. I was wondering if it would be realistic for me to get in with my current stats or if I need to improve?

Currently I have a 3.56 weighted gpa, which will probably get closer to a 3.6 after junior year. My highest sat score is a 1240 (retaking in June). I also have some decent ec's like working a part-time job, being president of art club, nahs member, 3 years track (1 varsity) and 2 years of varsity skiing. I probably forgot a few smaller ec's but those are the main ones. The sat hasn't been going well and idk if I'll be able to 1300. I'm undecided for now but I know I don't want to do any of the crazy competitive majors.

Basically what I'm asking is if I apply as an undecided major with my current stats what are my chances of getting in?

What is the placement test

Hey everyone,

I have to take my college placement test soon, and honestly, I'm pretty nervous about it since I don't really know what to expect. I'm just curious about how the whole process actually works.

For anyone who has taken it recently, could you give me some insight on a few things?

  • How does it actually look/work? Is it mostly multiple-choice? How many sections are there usually (math, reading, writing)?
  • Is there a camera watching you? Is it proctored online where you have to turn on your webcam and screen share, or is it just a lockdown browser? Or do you have to go to a testing center?
  • What should I actually study? I know it's supposed to just "place" you, but I want to brush up so I don't accidentally get put in a remedial class I don't need. Any specific math topics or grammar rules I should review?
  • What happens if I do badly on it? Do I just get put into a lower-level intro class, or does it actually impact my GPA or admission? Can you retake it if you mess up the first time?

I’d really appreciate any tips, experiences, or advice you guys can share. Thanks in advance!

Graduation Ceremony Recording?

Hi all, looking for a place where the commencement ceremonies are posted, specifically the Master's one. Family didn't get a chance to see it live and I was hoping to share a clip with them.

I was waiting for the Commencement recording to be published on https://www.umass.edu/commencement/livestream, but it looks like access to the site was denied? I thought it might be because I graduated, but I asked an undergraduate friend and they couldn't see it either.

Trouble Waiving SHBP

I am an incoming first year student and all the things I need to do are so confusing and there is like no help whatsoever anywhere on the websites. I am trying to waive the SHBP student health insurance since I already have my own and when I tried to make an account on wellfleet it said they couldn’t find my account?? I put my bday and my spire ID, since that is legit the only student ID they gave me. Any idea on how to fix this? 🫩

Lost item- $100 reward

[FOUND!!]
[A very kind person messaged me and showed me he found my item soon after I posted this. We had a lovely conversation and I cannot be more thankful for him. Thank you to all of you giving me suggestions in the responses below, I am still learning a lot about UMass, and your insights do not go unnoticed. It’s been hard coming to a new school but the people here continue to prove to me that I made the right choice. Thank you.]

Hello everyone.
This is not the typical post for this subreddit but I don’t know what to do.
This morning around 9:15AM I checked out of orchard hill and headed towards haigis mall to take the Peter Pan to Logan.
Upon making it to Haigis loop I realized one of my bags had ripped and I lost an item that is of extreme importance to me.
It’s a stuffed animal of Winnie the Pooh. I know. Again, maybe not the best place for this but I have to try.
I’ve had him since I was a little girl when my family and I were moving a lot. I’m running out of savings but I seriously would have rather had someone steal money from me.

I transferred to UMass this January. I don’t know what other options there are. I understand this is not the conventional post here but again, I have to try.

The photo is the route I took.

If there is anything else anyone thinks I should do please let me know. With all due respect I am not interested in hearing “there is nothing you can do” and the like. I am very, very distraught. I would be forever indebted to the person who could find this for me. Thank you.

Meal Swipe ending date is wrong? Ends tomorrow*

Apparently the UMass dining meal swipes end tomorrow (May 17), my friend just confirmed it with multiple blue wall dining plan supervisors— though this email (image) was sent out earlier in the semester saying that they end on the 31st of May.

This is a big mess up, if true— a lot of people were probably planning on saving their swipes for the rest of May. Even the dining hall supervisors didn’t know this email was sent out.
