Hi everyone,
I’m starting training for a marathon (Newcastle/Gateshead 2027) and I’m trying to pick a good all-round daily trainer to take me from beginner level through training and ideally the race itself. I have an old pair of trainers that I'm going to use till around end of July/start of August and then I'm planning on an upgrade once committed.
I’m currently a somewhat beginner runner (a few 5k's here and there) but reasonably active (netball + football weekly). I’m planning to build gradually from May onwards.
My Foot-
- UK shoe size, 4.5–5
- Slightly wide forefoot
- Suspected underpronation (supination) when walking
- Hypermobility / ankle instability (can roll ankles easily, weak stabilisers)
- Average height 163cm/50kg, if that helps :)
Goals/Needs in a running shoe-
- Comfort is priority
- One main shoe for daily training + long runs + eventually marathon
- Would like some “bounce/propulsion” feel if possible
- Needs to handle gradual mileage build-up over 1 year
- Will be running in UK weather (wet + road + some paths)
Shoes I've looked at so far-
- New Balance 860 v15 (interested but unsure if too stability-focused)
- ASICS Novablast 5 (like the idea of it but unsure about stability)
- Brooks Ghost 17 (fit seems good but I don’t love the look)
- Nike Pegasus 42 (maybe but worried about narrow fit)
Given my foot type and goals, would you recommend a neutral cushioned shoe, a mild stability shoe, or something like the Novablast style?
And are there any specific models I should be trying that suit slightly wide feet + ankle instability but still feel fun/comfy to run in?
Thanks in advance!
