Moral Concerns for Super Mario Galaxy 1
Hi all! So I’m a long time Mario fan. My older brother got Super Mario Galaxy 1 for me when I was a kid, which was about a decade ago (or a little more). Now, as an adult, I returned to the game and bought it on my switch. I just completely finished it (Luigi play-through and all), and I have some moral concerns about certain aspects of the game.
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely loved it. I cried multiple times. The storytelling and gameplay was amazing. I’m already downloading the sequel as we speak.
BUT…I do have questions. Here’s a list of my concerns below.
1.) The Luma Shop
So I understand that Luma’s destiny is to transform into different things. I’ve made peace with that (although I still find it a bit morbid). But the Luma shop…when the blue Luma transforms into whichever mushroom you choose, is he just gone? Bro gave up his life for thirty star bits? I find it sad to think that he just becomes a mushroom and we fricking eat him. I like it better and understand more when it’s sometbing like the hungry Luma’s on Rosalina’s ship, where they transform into the pink sling stars and go back to their normal form once you’ve sprung through them.
2.) Rosalina’s Mental Health
This poor woman. I am concerned for her. She was put into the role of being the Luma’s mother since she was young and while it’s clear she has affection for them, I can’t help but feel bad for her. And she’s also been witness to every Luma’s death and rebirth. From what I can tell from the first games lore, she was just a normal girl who encountered the space ship and decided to travel with Luma. Also, what’s that about? Are children just allowed to leave their parents and family? Did she even leave them a fricking note or say goodbye? Her family is probably dead now since it’s been hundreds of years. Like damn, that’s dark. Also, who is the celestial mother? Was it just her from the future? Is it HER mom? I’ve got too many questions.
Also, how did Rosalina’s mom even die? I guess that’s not too important but I’m still curious. And why did she look exactly like adult Rosalina, dress and everything? Also, where did Rosalina’s guitar just spawn from? I assume she dug it out of the ice but how tf did she learn to play. Self taught, I guess? Another thing, how is Rosalina able to live hundreds of years if she was originally just a normal girl? I assumed it was the power the Luma’s imbued upon her or something.
3.) Mario Just Ending It
What happens when we “die” on something like the races or we when don’t collect all the purple coins? Since it takes a life away from us, I always thought it was funny to think that Mario or Luigi were so distraught with their failure that they ended it and just jumped.
4.) Baby Piranha Dino Thing.
I feel bad that we have to kill it. I get that it’s an enemy but we literally crack it out of its shell and then just obliterate it. Like damn.
5.) Super Luigi Galaxy
I thought in this play through, Mario would basically replace Luigi and it would be like a personality/role swap. Nope. We’re just gonna have two fricking Luigi’s. And I think Luigi even mentions it and he’s like “that’s weird.” How does that make sense? And in this universe, is Peach Luigi’s girlfriend? Because she calls out his name still in the finale. But then why did she send the letters to Mario? Where tf is Mario?
Anyways, that’s all. Also DISCLAIMER: this post is for gits and shiggles. Yes, I did actually have some of these questions, but I’m not actually too concerned on Nintendo’s choices for an 18 yr old game. I love SMG1 ❤️❤️🍄⭐️💫🪐🌎
