Hello all, hope you’re well.
Today I adopted a Maine Coon from a couple. They had a good relationship with the cat, and when I went to visit her twice beforehand, she was very friendly with me, which surprised them since they are usually not like that with new strangers. My mother also has two Maine Coons, so I’m quite familiar with their character and temperament. Now that I live alone, I decided to adopt one myself.
On the day I brought her home, she was quite stressed in the car, which is understandable. The moment I got home and opened the carrier, she sniffed around briefly before sprinting off and hiding behind a large wardrobe. It’s a spot I rarely move and is heavy for me to move or clean behind since I don’t use that part of the house, and she has stayed there ever since.
It has now been about 6 hours since she hid there. During this time, she hasn’t eaten, drunk any water, or used the bathroom. I’m starting to get worried, especially because the area behind the wardrobe is dusty.
My mother suggested that I should just leave her alone and place food and water nearby, saying she won’t stay there forever. At the same time, I’m conflicted about whether I should try to get her out because of the dust, but I’m worried that forcing her out will only make her more stressed.
Importantly note that thus is also the 2nd time someone gave the poor baby away in the span of 2 years of her life snd I promised her that my home will be her last as I do not want to give her away.
I’d really appreciate any advice. Thank you.
Edit: I have been keeping tabs with her about every 2-3 hours and she is fine I can even see her eyes glowing as its dark and she has also been moving around behind there
