This is going to be probably all over the place but I’m a mom seeking advice for the upcoming school year. My son is about to be done with kindergarten at his current school that he has attended since preschool (public). He currently has an IEP for speech due to his hearing loss so we’ve been trying to get him caught up and his whole team is great. He’s made excellent progress with them and obviously knows his school well. I have signed him up for the charter school near our new house as we have heard many great things about it from a family member. There’s pros and cons to both schools. The dropoff/pickup at current school is kind of a mess at times whereas new school gets kids out one at a time in a safe matter. They had a threat this year at current school and they were so vague with parents on the issue. My biggest worry is how he’s going to react and adjust to this next year. Every new year he has a pretty bad reaction for the first month regardless but again he knows the staff and his school now. I’m just worried a whole new environment is going to really put him in a tough spot. His current school never really does fun events or field days for the kids either like I’ve heard for other schools. Also, when I’ve spoken to him about this to get him excited about attending the same school as his cousin, he tells me no and he wants to stay at the school where his best friend is. At the same time, I would have better communication with the new school’s teachers and could volunteer in his class more. I’m in a tough spot on this. I don’t want to traumatize my kid. Would love to hear from either teachers or parents.
