New potential steno student (help?)

I’m considering going to school for stenography this fall. I’m a single mom in Portland, OR and I work full time for a law firm. I’m aware this would be a massive undertaking so I’ve signed up for Project Steno and purchased a stenoob as well to see if this is something I really want.

However, I’m worried I won’t be able to make a living freelancing. Stability is very important to me, but being a single mom with no child support I’m very scared to make any moves. Right now we’re making do, but I can’t afford a car, I can’t put much away for my daughter’s future. I have time to practice and she’s aging out of our state funded daycare in 5 years. I’ll still be working while I get certified but it’s after I’m scared of!

What was your experience the first year court reporting? I can’t seem to find many numbers, I’ve seen anywhere from $60k/year to well over $100k. My current position caps out at $70k/year and it’s just not enough for what I want to give to my daughter.
