Does your A90 Supra make a weird clunking noise?

So I just wanted to share this for my fellow A90 owners. My 2022 3.0 Premium, at 25k miles, started making this odd clunking/rattling noise. It would happen on the freeway, over rough pavement, while braking, and during acceleration. I could also feel it through the steering wheel.

First, I replaced the brake pads since they had a bit of play in them. No luck.

Then I replaced the lower control arms because they had a lot of movement in them. Still no luck.

Eventually, I found a thread on the Supra forums that touched on the issue of the steering rack. It also cross-checks with the BMW side since it’s the same rack system.

The culprit: the steering rack thrust bushing.

For the Supra, it’s actually a fairly cheap and easy repair — you just add grease.

Apparently, the assembly line didn’t apply enough grease where the bushing rides against the steering arm. That causes the bushing to rattle in place since the steering arm is directly connected to the front wheels. The grease acts not only as a lubricant, but also as a noise isolator.

Here’s a before-and-after video I made and posted on YouTube. The “how to fix it” link is in the YouTube description. If you get this noise and it’s driving you nuts, the fix — including tools and parts — is less than $50–$60 and takes about an hour of your time.
