Student and Post Study Visa Enquiry

Hi everyone,

I am an international student currently studying at ANU and graduating in May 2026. I’m looking for some advice regarding visa options, as my situation is a bit specific.

Right now, I am doing research with a professor at ANU and working on a paper (in my own time). This research requires access to hardware and human-robot interaction setups, so I need to be physically present in Canberra. The paper deadline is in September 2026.

At the same time, I also have a job offer in Canberra, so my plan is to apply for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) after graduation and continue working.

Here’s where things get complicated:

  • The professor I’m working with expects to receive funding around May–July 2027.
  • He has indicated that once the funding comes through, he would be able to sponsor me for a PhD.
  • Ideally, I want to stay in Australia, keep working, continue research, and then transition into a PhD under him when funding is available.

However, I have heard from someone (and from my research on this enquiry) that it may not be possible to go from a 485 visa back to a student visa (subclass 500). I’m not trying to “visa hop”, I am genuinely interested in continuing research in AI/robotics and pursuing a PhD with this professor.

So my questions are:

  1. Is it actually possible to transition from a 485 visa back to a student visa in this kind of situation?
  2. Are there any restrictions or risks I should be aware of?
  3. Is there any way to continue working while preparing for a PhD (or while on a student visa later)?
  4. Are there alternative pathways I should consider to stay in Australia and continue this research?
  5. Will it help if I get a letter or something from professor indicting that he is willing to sponsor me?

I would really appreciate any advice, especially from people who’ve been in a similar situation or understand Australian visa rules well.

Thanks in advance.

Hey everyone,

I’m a university student in Australia and will be graduating around June this year. I’m currently applying for grad roles, so I’ve been looking into LinkedIn Premium to help with networking and messaging recruiters.

Before I commit to paying for it, I wanted to ask if anyone knows:

  • Any student discounts or offers available in Australia?
  • Any legitimate free trial extensions or promotions?
  • Any programs through universities or LinkedIn itself that students can access?
  • Anyone who has premium and can share it with me

Ideally, I’m hoping to have access at least until the end of June while I’m actively job hunting.

Would really appreciate any advice or tips!

Thanks in advance
