I’m looking for recommendations for a very specific kind of Naruto SI/isekai fic.
We all know the usual formula: some random guy from the real world gets reincarnated into Naruto, his modern education somehow lets him invent absurdly overpowered jutsu, he speedruns the power system, builds a harem, and outsmarts everyone.
And we also know the opposite kind of story: a canon character goes through a disastrous mission, gets tortured, traumatized, and has to painfully adapt and survive afterward.
So I’m wondering: has anyone seen a fic that actually combines both ideas?
An SI who walks into the Naruto world thinking he’s clever, genre-savvy, and prepared… only to get absolutely destroyed by the reality of the setting. Not in an edgy “suffering for shock value” way, but genuinely facing consequences for arrogance, bad assumptions, or trying to exploit meta-knowledge in a world full of child soldiers, political violence, and monsters pretending to be humans.
Basically:
self-insert overestimates himself
tries to game the setting
pays a genuinely brutal price for it
has to adapt or break
I’m especially interested in:
psychological consequences
realistic shinobi culture
failed plans/backfiring manipulation
long-term trauma or loss
the SI realizing Naruto is a horrifying world to live in, not a power fantasy
