The Big Sea (Hughes)

This didn’t disappoint. Hughes recounts his time growing up poor and black across the Midwest in the early 20th century. His travels to Mexico, Europe, and Africa. As well as his time as a leading figure of the Harlem renaissance. The prose is very simple but
captures every single environment and person he met vividly. I like his first hand account of the renaissance and life as a writer more than some of the academic work that’s done on the subject.

Reading it has also made me appreciate his poetry more, which before I only liked on a surface level. Hearing how he was able to craft “The Weary Blues” or “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” helped me better understand what he was going for and why.
