Thoughts on people overboarding on culture
As a person who's looked around the internet a little bit, you'll notice that Americans tend to latch onto the smallest percentage of their heritage they find and make it a large part of their personality
I think I understand why
White Americans, like myself, don't really have our own culture or heritage (which has become a joke and meme which I find hilarious), but we can't really have our own culture besides "gun nuts" or "obese."
And everyone craves a community, so deeply that it's human nature to seek it out
But when you're a country of immigrants, where everyone's been blended together so much it's impossible to tell what exactly you are anymore, we can't really find that community. Hence, some turn to those little DNA tests and find they're "six percent german" and then show up to Oktoberfest and go way overboard trying to assimilate into the culture
It seems obnoxious and sad from the outside, but on the inside it seems even more sad. As someone who's watched mental health issues go on their entire life, I can see exactly where this deep desire to find that community comes from, and how overcorrecting makes its face known a lot
