Debt - Options for me?
I took out a personal loan late last year (which now is sitting around 17k) in order to relocate for grad school. In order to get a visa I needed to provide proof of accommodations in the EU - and with student loan refunds not coming until 10 days before classes, I determined my best bet was to take out a personal loan, and pay it off completely when my student loan disbursement came in.
I was scammed out of the apartment. Long story. I reported it to the bank immediately, but they denied any and all attempts to get the money back and basically said they would not help me.
I also filed police reports, but none of the money was recovered.
That same bank has now sent me to collections on this loan (SoFi, in case it's relevant). I paid the minimum for about 6 months, but it really just was not manageable.
I have no assets and am not working in the US or Europe right now. I have no money for a lump-sum payment if requested.
What is my best way forward here? Do I have any legal recourse?
