O-1A Approved after RFE (Academic Researcher) – Timeline & Experience

After months of uncertainty, my O-1A petition was finally approved! This subreddit was incredibly helpful during the process, so I wanted to share my timeline and what worked for me.

Background

  • PhD from India Civil/Environmental Engineering
  • Postdoc of four years in the USA
  • Currently a Faculty Fellow in India (Not in the USA)
  • Joining a public university as a tenure-track Assistant Professor
  • 24 peer-reviewed publications
  • ~950 Google Scholar citations
  • 80+ journal reviews
  • Indian patent holder
  • 6 letters initially, 6 letters after RFE

Timeline (about four months from start to aporoval)

  • Mid Feb 2026: University decided to pursue an O-1A petition after H-1B complications.
  • Mar–Apr 2026: Collected evidence and independent recommendation letters.
  • Petition filed (Premium Processing).
  • RFE received (last week of May 2026): USCIS accepted several criteria but requested additional evidence demonstrating that my original scientific contributions were of major significance (14th business day). They acknowledged original contributions.
  • Last week of June 2026: Submitted a comprehensive RFE response with additional independent expert letters, industry letters, and stronger evidence of downstream impact.
  • July 2026:O-1A Approved (9th business day).

What helped

The RFE wasn't asking for more publications. it wanted stronger evidence of impact.

Our response focused on:

  • Independent expert letters.
  • Industry testimonials demonstrating practical applications.
  • Evidence that my research had influenced subsequent work.
  • A much stronger narrative explaining why the contributions mattered.

My advice

  • Don't panic if you receive an RFE.
  • Read the RFE carefully and answer exactly what USCIS is asking.
  • Independent experts who can explain the significance of your work are invaluable.
  • Focus on impact, not just numbers.

This process took a lot of patience, but the approval made it all worthwhile. I'm grateful to everyone who supported my petition, especially my recommenders and attorney.

Happy to answer general questions about academic O-1 petitions or RFEs. Good luck to everyone who's waiting. you've got this!

Reciept number for USCIS case tracker and I797 (DS-160) same?

Hi, could anyone please confirm whether the receipt number for case tracking on the USCIS portal is the same as the receipt number we enter on the DS-160?

My O1 petition was just approved after an RFE, but I have yet to get my I-797. If the I-797 receipt number matches the one we get when tracking through the USCIS portal, I would like to pay and start the appointment scheduling process.

O-1A RFE: Judging and Scholarly Articles Accepted, Original Contributions Challenged

My O1A RFE response has been sent.

I originally applied under four O-1A criteria: judging, scholarly articles, original contributions, and published material/media mentions. For context, I have 23 peer-reviewed publications, approximately 900 citations, and more than 70 peer reviews. Starting as a tenure-track faculty position at a public university. Currently, not on a any visa and outside the USA.

USCIS accepted the judging and scholarly articles criteria. They also acknowledged my publication and citation record, the reputation of the journals where my work was published, and that I had made original research contributions. However, they issued an RFE on the original contributions criterion because they felt the evidence did not sufficiently demonstrate downstream adoption/use of my work or establish that the contributions were of major significance in the field.

Although I initially submitted three expert letters and three peer advisory letters, USCIS indicated that the letters were largely testimonial in nature and did not provide sufficient discussion or evidence regarding downstream use, adoption, or broader impact of my research.

The published material/media criterion was not accepted because USCIS wanted articles focused specifically on me or my work, rather than broader coverage of topics related to my research.

For context, USCIS had already accepted two criteria before issuing the RFE. The main issue was not whether my work was original, but whether it had achieved major significance through downstream use, influence, or impact in the field.

In response, I submitted five new expert letters (three independent), along with a 10-page RFE response that I prepared myself:

  • Two letters from industry experts discussing the practical significance and impact of my work on industry practice;
  • One letter from a researcher who has cited my work and can speak to its influence on subsequent research;
  • Two letters from senior experts familiar with my work and contributions.

The new letters focus specifically on the significance, influence, adoption, and field-wide impact of my research, which was the primary concern raised in the RFE. We are not adding anything further to the media criterion and are instead focusing on strengthening the original contributions argument and the final merits determination.

For those who received a similar RFE focused on "major significance" or downstream impact rather than whether the work was original, what was your outcome and timeline after USCIS received your response?

O1A RFE- no details and chance after this

I got RFE on my O1A premium processing on 20th. Case status says so but the sponsor and lawyer have no communication yet. Unsure why I got RFE.
I understand that the hard copy by mail may arrive later.

Do they not send the RFE details as a soft copy, right away?
Dont they have any portal to check this out?
How much chance do you hv after RFE?

I am getting anxious. 23 papers, 900 citations, 70 plus peer reviews. Incoming TT faculty @public University.

Any O-1A approvals in April/May from the California Service Center?

If yes, could you share:

  1. Total business days (premium processing)

  2. Direct approval or RFE?

  3. If RFE, on which day was it issued, and how long after the response for approval?

My receipt date is April 30th, and I am trying to understand current timelines/trends. Thanks!

The university approved my O-1 for a TT faculty position on Feb 17. My lawyer requested recommendation letters soon after, and all 6 letters were submitted by March 3. The petition was finalized around April 12, and will hopefully be filed around 28th April.

So overall, it’s been ~8 weeks just for petition preparation (not counting this admin delay). For context, my profile has ~23 papers, 1 patent, ~890 citations, and 70+ peer reviews.

Is this a reasonable timeline for O-1A petition prep, or on the slower side?

Has anyone recently scheduled an O-1 visa appointment in India? How long did it take to get a slot at the consulate/embassy? How soon is it available in India? I hope the situation is not like H1B visas.

Would really appreciate recent experiences—trying to gauge realistic timelines. Thanks!
