I absolutely adore Mississippi, but every time I visit I get absolutely savaged by ants

Full disclosure; I was born, raised, and currently live overseas so I don't have the ant-awareness that seems to be bred into every American.

I visit Mississippi at least once a year, and as soon as I step off the plane the countdown begins as to when the little fuckers will inevitably get me.

This trip I managed to last exactly one week before I stopped to take a picture of a lovely stretch of the Pascagoula coast line and they were on me in less than 30 seconds.

We planted 7 of these in a row last year, a metre between them (with a young pear tree in between numbers 4 and 5, in case that matters).

1 through 4 have done very well, doubling in height and volume.

5 through 7 have put on only a little volume, and they put up a single long shoot with a a handful of leaves on top. These shoots were literally half the plants' overall height! So we pruned that down in March.

The pic shows the leaves of number 6, I'd say at least half its leaves have this odd discolouration (fungus?). It's the same with 5 and 7.

1 to 4 have a handful of leaves with these spots of them, not nearly as extensive.

As an aside, we bookended the row of Crunchies with two Red Robins (we had space for 9 plants but our garden centre only had 7 Crunchies), but they are doing spectacularly! In hindsight, I should have just done a whole row of them.
