Afib at 23

Hey everyone, I’m a 23-year-old male, and I weigh around 188 pounds. Exactly seven days ago, I experienced my first-ever episode of atrial fibrillation (AFib), and honestly, I’ve been scared to death about it ever since.

Last Sunday around 7 p.m., I was sitting at my desk checking emails when, all of a sudden, I felt my heart beating strangely and racing. I decided to go to the ER, where they confirmed that I was in AFib. They started an IV, ran blood work, and transferred me to a cardiac hospital.

After approximately four to four and a half hours in AFib, my heart spontaneously returned to normal sinus rhythm. They drew additional blood samples, but ultimately, I was told they weren’t sure what caused the episode.
I ended up staying overnight at the cardiac hospital and was discharged the following day around noon, after spending approximately 12 hours there.
Since then, I haven’t experienced another episode, and I have an appointment with a cardiologist in about five days.
I also want to mention that I’m probably in the worst shape in my life. Although my weight is fairly reasonable, I’ve barely been moving for the past three months. I haven’t been to the gym or been very active, even though exercise had been a regular part of my life for the previous five years.
I know I’m young, and I’m trying not to overthink everything, but this experience has honestly terrified me. I never expected something like this to happen at 23, and now I find myself constantly worrying about my heart and whether it could happen again.
I guess I’m just looking for some reassurance and hoping to hear from others who have experienced something similar, especially anyone who developed AFib at a young age.
