Can the protagonist be evil? I can't think of any novel, short story, movie etc. where the protagonist is evil. For instance a serial killer, occultist etc. Maybe the only exception being The Monk, but I haven't yet read this novel.

Are there any reasons for that? Would it be a violation of the rules of "the art/craftsmanship"? Is that because we identify with good people?

What do we do when we want to protray some evil person? Make him antagonist? He must follow a character arc, starting good and becoming evil?
