MET’s new gothic architecture exhibit and book
The MET has a great new Gothic architecture exhibit that I had the pleasure to see yesterday when I went with my dad to see their temporary Raphael exhibit.
It includes notebooks with design ideas/concepts, floor plans, large blueprints of facades, etc. It’s incredible to see how they imagined and brainstormed the structural elements down to the finest details, and then somehow executed these plans with the most basic of tools. The unmatched precision in their artistry is mind-blowing—raw talent, pure genius and meticulous diligence aided by divine inspiration. Truly the apex of human accomplishment. You can get an idea of what they have there here: https://www.metmuseum.org/exhibitions/gothic-by-design-the-dawn-of-architectural-draftsmanship/exhibition-objects
I still can’t fathom how they did the math to figure out which mechanisms could work and how they measured with such exactness but I bought the MET’s book corresponding to the exhibit to hopefully get some more info and a better understanding. The book is really nice, filled with high quality images and more detailed information, so definitely worth $40 and surely a valuable addition to any bookcase.
