house/pet sitting in fairbanks?

i don't have enough karma to post in the fairbanks sub lol

trying to get into house and/or pet sitting as a side hustle bc i need a little extra money. i don't really know anyone outside of work and it seems like most websites aren't worth the time. was curious if anyone had any recommendations on how to advertise. also taking ideas for other flexible side hustles. doordashing is not worth it up here.

election question!

does anyone know of a website or if anything's going to be sent in the mail (like a few years ago) about the candidates for senate and governor? i would like to make an informed choice but a lot of these people running say absolutely nothing on their campaign websites. i dont give a shit where you went to high school dude i want to know your stance on core social and economic issues. i know the options for senate are limited and itll come down to one over the other but at least for governor i want to have a better idea of what everyone wants to do and i still have no fucking clue??? do any of these candidates actually talk about their goals like anywhere??? every ad is just shaking hands and going "this is my current job! here's my family! vote for me!" dpmo i will knock all this shit over

okay thanks xoxo

new to working with kids (help?)

so i have a couple minor questions i'll put at the end if you wanna skip to them but i'll share some background up front.

i'm 22M and recently pivoted from working as an advocate at a shelter for adult victims of DV, SA, and trafficking (did it for ~15 months) to working with a shelter for youth 6-18. the youth shelter is largely comprised of foster kids w/o placement, runaways, and homeless teens. i'm in an area of alaska where basically any social services are extremely limited for about a 350 mile radius, and our CPS equivalent is god awful, so it's important to me that i'm showing up the way i need to be. i've not done any formal education outside of work trainings and didn't do well in university (dropped out a couple years ago pursuing something entirely different) mostly due to having an autistic and bipolar combo going on, but i am generally really good at the work itself. i lack a fair amount of social skills and find it difficult to be super engaging with the kids but im rather approachable, they like me, and i can do the things that matter just fine.

questions:

  1. there's this really annoying and aggressive older teen we have right now who intentionally riles up me, other staff, and the other kiddos. we've had to gut the place of electronics and hold several mediations over the last week alone bc of the fighting they start. how do i empathize with the other kids complaining about this person's behavior without saying something bad about them?

  2. i sometimes struggle to find the line between being a safe person/friend so they actually open up to me and being a responsible advocate/authority figure so they actually listen when i ask them to do chores, clean up, etc. is there a mental boundary or invisible barrier that works for y'all i can try to guide myself with?

  3. this ones kinda niche. i have to cook lunch or dinner for them and we can hold up to 12. we have a basic home kitchen setup and utilities but can pretty much get any food we want on order. does anyone know some good lunch/dinner recipes that everyone will like, are easily multiplied, and take <1 hour?

TIA :)

income requirement question

i'm from US and my partner is scottish. she is working on finishing uni in the next year or so but worried about not being able to find something that pays £29k+ for an unmarried partner visa. i'm working on getting into the maritime industry in some capacity, which is probably also gonna take me quite some time to get established somewhere. once i do have a contract im going to try and work 1 month on/1 off or something similar.

my question is if i was paid in USD but able to live in scotland on my downtime, could this count toward our combined income? i think it would take a lot of stress off both our plates if i had a way to contribute.

getting started questions

background:
22yo based in US. i've always wanted to work at sea and based on the research i've done it seems like cruise lines are the easiest way to break into the maritime industry (correct me if i'm wrong!) especially with the coast guard being so behind on MMC applications. eventually i want to get my deck ratings and get into yachting because im a scuba diver too but unable to practice due to location. other than scuba diving i have a background in customer service, cleaning, and social work/clerical tasks.

i have my TWIC enrollment appointment next week. i know STCW basic safety training is required but ive been unemployed for a while and its a big investment without a high probability of a job bc i would have to travel for it as well.

questions:

  1. is it worth doing the basic training asap or is it better to wait for an offer first?
  2. do i need to complete the CG-719K or is there a different medical form/cert for cruise ships?
  3. what's it like for trans/queer people on board? i pass pretty well (ftm) and don't rly disclose that but risk assessment is important in this situation i think!
  4. which liner is best for both entry level w/o MMC and job satisfaction?

any help is appreciated !

i've been unemployed for about 3 months now. my last job arbitrarily placed me on admin leave just days before fulfilling my notice. i don't know what i did so wrong and it was never explained to me and i did not feel safe/comfortable to ask. sitting with this while being rejected or ghosted entirely after interviews has caused a lot of depression and frustration. i only submitted a notice in the first place bc it was a very high-stress emotionally involved job that i was never able to turn off. the management was also very toxic (lots of gaslighting & more) but that a diff story.

i'm in my hometown which is landlocked and small but it's been my dream to work at sea in some capacity. i blew a lot of money in 2024 to become a professional scuba diver and haven't been able to use my certs due to location. now it's been so long since i've been in the water it would be a hefty investment to put myself back on the radar AND i'd need to move AND id need to find someone comfortable with my bipolar diagnosis. my girlfriend lives in another country im supposed to immigrate to within the next couple of years and there's nowhere to dive close to where we'd be living either.

i'm autistic and my special interests are ocean/ship related.

i spent the last few days doing some research on getting into the maritime industry instead, thinking that might open some more doors and be equally as enjoyable for me long term. i made a whole plan for myself only to find out that i probably wouldn't be medically cleared to work on a ship even though i know i could do it and it would make me happy. even IF i was it would be even harder to find someone willing to hire me bc im bipolar.

i didn't do well in university and dropped out, i struggle to be consistent with meds (newly prescribed wellbutrin + restarting buspirone), i have a hard time holding down jobs, i have no usable skills, and i feel like it's pointless to entertain trying to build a career for myself. i'm trying to cope with the reality that everything i'm passionate about is virtually unattainable. my gf doesn't understand any of this and it just makes everything worse to hear her and others talk about how im still young (22) and have time to figure things out. i figured out what i want to do already and im not allowed to fucking do it. i'm so devastated. i'll be begging for min wage the rest of my life bc a piece of paper says im a burden and liability anywhere important. chronic disappointment to everyone i care about. i'm so tired.
