This portrait was made in 1988 by photographer Jamel Shabazz and is one of the many wonderful images in his latest photo book “Prospect Park: Photographs of a Brooklyn Oasis, 1980 to 2025” (2026).

I’m interested in learning where in the park this was take and in the history behind the carved tree trunk since I’d never seen it photographed before this book. Judging from the background, my best guess is that this was taken by the old wooden gazebo off of East Dr and across Duck Island, closest to the Parkside Ave entrance, but figured I’d ask here!

She introduced herself as Jenny Kennedy and played seven solo songs before joining the Skydaddy band for backup vocals and clarinet. The songs she played sounded quite lovely and I hope they get studio recordings in the future. She also mentioned she’s working on an album!
