Apply to be the first Youth Poet Laureate of Jersey City!

In collaboration with Urban Word NYC (home of the National Youth Poet Laureate), the Jersey City Free Public Library is launching the city’s first-ever Youth Poet Laureate program. We’re inviting all creative writers ages 13–18 who live in Jersey City to apply and share their work!

After the application closes, a panel of judges will select 12 finalists to participate in a five-week poetry performance workshop series. The workshops will build toward a live, onstage final round of judging where each finalist will perform a poem, and one poet will be named the first Jersey City Youth Poet Laureate. All finalists will be honored for their creativity and dedication to our community.

The Youth Poet Laureate will receive a $500 award and opportunities to perform their work around Jersey City. They will also receive the optional opportunity to compete for the National Youth Poet Laureate title. The inaugural poet of the national program was Amanda Gorman in 2017.

The Jersey City Youth Poet Laureate will serve the city for one year.

Apply now!
Application closes June 30, 2026.

The wait is over! Hudson Gives is officially here, and the Jersey City Free Public Library Foundation is ready to make a massive impact for our youngest readers. 📚

While the giving period is open from May 4 through May 21, today, Thursday, May 14, is the official Giving Day where your support matters most! 🌟

This #HudsonGives, we’re leveling up the Jersey City Free Public Library collection! We currently have about 200 decodable books per branch, but our young readers need more. 📖

Why Decodable Books? They use phonetic patterns that help kids practice the specific sounds they know. Whether it’s an early learner or an older student who needs a little extra practice, these books are the bridge to reading success.

The Impact: $10 = 1 Book $50 = 5 Books $100 = 10 Books

Let’s ensure that every child in JC has the tools to become a confident reader! 💙💛

Donations between $10 and $100 will be matched at 2:01pm and 5:51pm!

Big news, Jersey City! Early giving for Hudson Gives is officially open, leading up to May 14. This year for Hudson Gives, the Jersey City Free Public Library Foundation is focused on a tangible goal: raising $10,000 to procure 1,000 new decodable books.

Currently, JCFPL has about 200 decodable books per branch, but our young readers need more! Decodable books use phonetic patterns that help kids practice the specific sounds they know. Whether it’s an early learner or an older student who needs a little extra practice, these books are the bridge to reading success!

Every donation helps us move closer to putting more books, and more opportunities, into our kids’ hands.

Join us in making literacy accessible for all. Let’s reach 1,000 books together.

The Hudson County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs, in conjunction with the New Jersey Room of the Jersey City Free Public Library, presents a lecture series in celebration of the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. For five months across the Spring and Summer of 2026, we will spend the first Thursday evening with a speaker on a wide range of Hudson County topics across our nation's first 250 years.

First up, on May 7, Michael Maring presents:

Lawman to Kingpin: Prohibition, Power, and the Unsolved Murder of George Affuso

During Prohibition, North Bergen became a battleground for bootleggers, political power brokers, and rival gangs operating in the shadow of New York City. This lecture traces the dramatic rise of George Affuso, a North Bergen police officer turned beer-running kingpin, whose influence reshaped the local underworld before ending in a deadly shootout that remains officially unsolved. This program explores how one man’s story reveals the larger tensions of law, loyalty, and survival in Hudson County during the 1920s and early 1930s.
