WARNING! Scammer in VVP

Hi neighbors, I want to share that there is a teen/young adult male going around Van Vorst Park/Downtown this morning asking for donations for the AUU Basketball team, mentioning “Times Square Team” and it is a scam.

He showed me the team’s instagram and he took my phone to put the Venmo account in the search bar (i know, this was dumb of me) and venmoed himself quite a bit of money with the caption “Rent” and then quickly gave me my phone and ran away.

Description: looks like he could be between the ages of 16-21, average height and slim, he is black, and he is wearing a blue sports zip up and i believe black sweatpants. he is super friendly.

I am sharing this as a cautionary tale and dealing with the consequences - i am not asking for advice on next steps but I wanted to make my neighbors aware of this scam.

5.20.26 Did anyone have problems cooling their space with AC or dehumidifier in yesterdays heat? Normally either works pretty well but just couldn't get it cool unless standing right in front of the unit. And after the storm it was still hot inside w windows open and fans blowing

Newport Leaf Blowers

M-F a chorus of gas-powered leaf blowers begins singing at 8:03am sharp and continues for multiple hours.

Does the noise bother anyone else? I live on one of the higher floors in and it’s still quite annoying—especially as someone who works second shift.

There's trees now?!? Aviva/Scholars Village

I guess they put trees on top of the green apartment buildings next to LSP. Perhaps to make up for all the trees they cut down next door recently. /s

But for real, I have a conspiracy that these buildings unintentionally lowered the rent in Communipaw. We were looking for a new apartment and noticed more options in our price range ($2800-3000) then a year ago. We toured a few places and the Aviva buildings were blocking the view of the Statue of Liberty. 🗽 (i refuse to call it scholars village)

DAGDA

Anyone else here have a shit experience there? They were “sold out” of half of the food on the menu, weren’t able to serve GUINNESS, and the manager was an absolute clown. They brought out cold gross cauliflower and then interrogated us on why we wanted to send it back and argued with us because we didn’t want it. My wife and I didn’t even ask for it to be taken off of the bill, it was just gross. Explain to me about how you can be “out of” a hot dog? Place will be gone in a year

App that tracks which blocks you've walked

I've always wanted to walk every block of the city but knew the overhead of tracking those walks would be a pain, so over the last couple months I made an app that checks off each block once you've walked it. Some friends wanted to try it so I just uploaded it to the App Store.

It works for all 5 boroughs and you can turn on passive tracking so that your blocks are tracked without opening the app. There's also a leaderboard so you can see how your stats compare to other New Yorkers.

The app is called WalkNYC and it's completely free. It's only on iOS right now but I'm looking into porting it to Android. Would love any feedback you all have! I'm hoping to expand it to more cities soon.

Here's the link: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/walknyc-walk-every-block/id6758922428

Update: As of this evening it's actually ranked #79 in the Navigation category of the App Store!

Path train etiquettes

Don’t want to make this negative and I’m sure people will be annoyed by this, but OMG if you’re standing in front of the door at a stop, can you please just step off for a second to let people out 😭 It’s really not that hard.

Lafayette Park Deserves Better

Went to Lafayette Park today and saw one of the newly planted cherry blossom trees knocked over and chewed up by a dog

Not only did the owner apparently let their dog do this, but they also just left it there on the ground without even attempting to stand it back up or report it. Absolute POS behavior. If your dog destroys public landscaping and your response is to walk away pretending nothing happened, you’re irresponsible and selfish

These trees were planted to improve the park for everyone in the community. They don’t magically appear there for free. People put time, money, and effort into making Lafayette Park nicer, and it takes one careless owner to damage it in a single moment

We tried to reset the tree ourselves and are going to do what we can to nurse it back to health. We’ll also be reaching out to the Parks / Forestry Department to see if they can help stabilize it properly. If possible, we’re probably going to fence it off temporarily too

If you’re a dog owner: control your dog, especially around newly planted trees and landscaping. And if your dog damages something, at least take responsibility for it instead of walking away

Really disappointing to see

Commuting from Tom’s River to jersey city

Hello all,

Recently accepted a position in jersey city a short walking distance outside the Newport station, and am wondering if anyone has experience with a central jersey -> jersey city commute like mine.

Driving to Metropark -> Newark penn -> Newport station gets me to work at 730 with a 2hr commute, considering driving up early to try and beat shore traffic and save money.

Does anyone make this commute strictly driving? If so, has traffic been somewhat predictable? Would commuting to a different station better suit my situation?

Any advice is appreciated

Already spent everything on emergency vet care and may have to go back

I honestly hate having to make a post like this because I know everyone is struggling right now and nobody wants to see another person asking for help online. But our cat Cashmere ended up in the emergency vet due to severe constipation, vomiting, and straining, and despite treatment and an enema, he still hasn’t fully improved.

There’s a chance he may have to go BACK to the ER and be admitted inpatient, which could cost several thousand dollars more. We already spent money we realistically could not afford because we couldn’t just let him suffer. I’ll be attaching the records/receipts because transparency matters to me.

If you’ve ever had a pet emergency, then you already know how fast the costs become overwhelming. We’re trying to prepare for what may come next while also recovering from what we already paid.

Even $5 genuinely helps. And if you can’t donate, sharing means just as much to us.

Thank you for reading and caring about our sweet boy.

Do grown people know how to ride a bus or need to be taught how to take a bus?

I would accept this type of behavior from teens, but on weekdays in the morning and evenings a lot of adults are going places, such as work, appointments, meeting people, etc.

If you get on a bus, move to the back and do not hog around the front door, blocking the aisle. Do not use seats meant for people with needs.

Two 87s and one 80 went by, and they had standing room. But these grown clowns were standing near the front and near the back door.
