run away board

hi all be CAREFUL! i love my one wheel have over 1000 miles on it from exploring nyc. today i was riding my board and it ran away from me when i jumped off. thank god i was in staten island (miserable place but wanted to see it, no reason to ever go back). i jumped off my board on some military base thing, and it ran away like an 8th of a mile since nothing was in the way. if that was in a populated area or in a rural area could have been bad. when i jump off as of now i make sure to knock my board over or use the sensor thing when you pick your leg up.

anyone had this happen?

Fire department is hiring

I see a lot of posts about work. if you’re 18-35 the fire department is hiring in JC (must be a resident).

the application is on the NJ civil service website.

those that truly want to get on take the “bernstein prep course” it’s 500-600 dollars but worth every penny. good luck. i have nothing to do with the company but it will exponentially increase your chance of getting on. if you’re a veteran who has been deployed to the theater of combat you are pretty much an automatic hire.

i just see a lot of posts about work figured id share this

anyone from NYC want to ride

hi all! i live in NYC (technically right over the river in NJ but can get into 9th street in 10 minutes).

i saw this guy that walked every block and park in nyc it took him 12 years and it inspired me. does anyone want to try and explore as much of nyc as possible? (also love riding the ferry). i’m a firefighter and work unique hours but i have a shit ton of time off. so if any nurses or other public safety on here that would want to explore even better cause we could really conquer a lot. anyone else id love to ride. NYC is my mission right now with one wheel

best place to buy real estate for 11 years from now

Hi all i’m a first responder who gets to collect my pension in 11 years. i live in a VCOL area (right outside nyc) i don’t intend to buy here since rent is so much less expensive for the amazing areas. However my stock portfolio is at about $500,000 and im 34. my dream was to go to the southwest but i have family there so i can always crash and im terrified of the water problems (i absolutely LOVE the land there).

to diversify my portfolio (might wait and see if we are in a housing bubble but just want to get ideas and taking climate into effect). what would be the best place to buy: cincinnati, somewhere in Michigan on one of the lakes (are there any cities with entertainment and stimulation?), Sacramento (yes i know water problems but can’t be arizona bad plus near tahoe), or Albuquerque NM (it seems like it’s a hidden gem with great weather but probably lack of water there too), or upstate NY by the Canadian border near Montreal.

I love the outdoors (snowboarding, hiking, riding my motorcycle, kayaking, etc.) but also value walkable cities. i also like the desert topography the most but i know with water issues to go a more logical route

friendly rant with a touch of advice

i feel like 25 percent of the posts are for people stuck in a loop. so many people post about doing other school roles, educational consulting, reading specialist. stuff that are all teacher adjacent. to be honest it’s sad. one caveat is if you have over 15 years in then your halfway to the pension in most states. but people with 2-10 years in or are still young. especially ones with no kids. try something new! something that’s not in the teaching umbrella. something thatll actually make you happier or pay your bills or both. move to a city with opportunities or use a different life strategy. i did and it’s so much more freeing. shit if you have some savings take a year off and travel or take risks. i do understand this economy for hiring but still go outside your comfort zone and box. there’s so much opportunity out there

best nyc hangout spots and places to network

hello all 2 questions.

i am very lucky to have a lot of time off work. however it can get boring sometimes. where are the best spots in nyc to hangout. like a coffee spot or bar that people will get to know you quick and make friends? or a league or whatever. trying to build community.

also because i have so much time off a side job would be great like sales or productions or something. where would be the best place to network for that?

feel free to answer one or both. or to shoot me a message

thank you in advance

good part time jobs or internships

Hello all I am a firefighter. i work 1-2 days a week on weekdays (sometimes i have a weekend shift). i have a college degree 34m. my job pays alright, nothing compared to many corporate jobs. however i find myself un stimulated enough with all my time off. i was wondering if there are any careers or internships that are part time or 1099 that i will qualify for. next week i plan on walking around manhattan and brooklyn to see what’s out there. as someone who is very social and goal oriented i definitely need something to work towards.

things i’m thinking about is real estate/commercial real estate, learning the coffee shop business, medical sales. also marketing seems interesting (doubt they have part time). what else is out there. feel free to DM me.
