We’re about to have custom white oak cabinets installed, and I’ve chosen Minwax Rustic Beige for the stain.
From what I’ve read, white oak typically does not need a pre-stain conditioner because it already absorbs stain fairly evenly, and conditioner can sometimes wash out or lighten the color.
However, my contractor says he normally uses pre-conditioner. To be fair, he has much more experience with painted cabinets than stained ones.
For those with experience staining white oak cabinetry:
• Would you recommend using a pre-conditioner or not?
• Are there situations where you would still use pre-conditioner on white oak?
• Any tips specific to Minwax stains on white oak?
I want to make sure we get the best possible result before moving forward. Thanks in advance!
