When Dale is exploring the shelter, the lingering shot of the empty gun rack with the “CHECK AND CLEAR ALL WEAPONS” stencil seems very deliberate. They left behind a lot of items in this room like the film reels, where did everything that should have been on that rack go? Could it be a clue about what happened to them?
