Bird of Paradise’s largest leaf curling inwards? More information below:

Hey everyone, I got this Bird of Paradise from the clearance section about two months ago. No pest damage, just cause of some sunburned spots.

It’s in this Chicago south facing window 100% of the time and indoors only, so it’s been getting about 500-600 PPFD for 2-3 hours of the day and slightly lower amounts in the morning and evening.

Watering-wise I put a wooden skewer in the soil and water when the soil is around 80% dry, but as you can see in the last picture it’s currently putting out two leaves at the same time so maybe I need to water it more.

My main question is do you think the leaf curling is due to too much sun, or possible underwatering? When I first bought it all the leaves were curled up a bit and when I watered they all straightened out.

It’s been fine in this sunny spot and put out a leaf before these two as well, so I would be surprised if it was too much sun. No fertilizer ever by the way, and I’m thinking of repotting soon since the IKEA soil is terrible and I can see the roots circling the bottom of the nursery pot/some are poking through the drainage holes. Thanks!

Killed one of these earlier, is it thrips/are these BoP leaves damaged by thrips?

Hey everyone, I found one of these earlier already dead near my BoP and here are what its leaves look like. I found another dead one on the ground as well but I can’t see any others with my eyes.

My Monstera which is about 8 feet away from it seems fine with no leaf damage like this at all. Should I still put the BoP in another room entirely? I’m thinking of buying the Captain Jack’s spray that gets recommended here a lot.

Info: Indoor plant in south facing window that I got from IKEA clearance a couple weeks ago. I use a wooden chopstick to tell when to water it, and I bottom water it by letting it sit in water for 1 hour or so. It’s still in the same nursery pot and potting mix from IKEA and the soil doesn’t seem too compacted, with pieces of bark and perlite throughout.

Thanks!

Wondering if this summer setup is alright?

Hey everyone, I have a south facing balcony with big windows (Chicago) but there’s a balcony above mine, meaning these IKEA plants have been getting very low PPFD indoors even at noon (measured 50-80 PPFD depending on the leaf with photone).

For the first time I moved them outside today and now the BoP and Monstera are getting 150-300 PPFD at noon in indirect light, and I’ve got the Yucca sitting in direct light.

My question: should I be trying to acclimate the BoP and Monstera to the direct light to move them as far forward as the Yucca is? Or will they grow well where they are? I’d like to maximize how much they grow this summer cause the Chicago winter lasts a while! Might need to get a big grow light at that point.

Thanks!
