Whittier Daily News

We’ve been Whittier Daily News subscribers for over 30 years. I know, we are dinosaurs, but we try to support local news. On 5/16/2026, we received a postcard stating our subscription would automatically renew on 5/29/2026 for $5.25 per week plus tax. This surprised us because we had already prepaid for a full year in August 2025 and had specifically opted out of “Special Editions” that could shorten the term.

Before we even had a chance to call and cancel, we were charged $300 on 5/19/2026 — nine days before the renewal date listed on the postcard.

When I called customer service, I was told our prepaid term had been shortened because of increased delivery surcharges, despite never receiving notice of any changes. I requested cancellation and a refund, but was told there is a “no refund” policy.

The representative offered to extend the subscription through August 2027, at a $200 rate. But I had already paid $300 and the agent could not clearly explain how the additional $100 already charged would be applied or for how long. At that point, I no longer trusted the billing practices and insisted on cancellation and a refund of the $300.

The agent finally submitted only a “request” for a refund, which will take up to 10 days to appear on my card, and they provide no status updates unless I call back myself. It is not guaranteed to be refunded, as it needs to be reviewed.

Very disappointing experience after more than three decades as a loyal subscriber.
