What to do with chimney! 17k to get redone.

What to do with chimney! 17k to get redone.

We have a very large chimney (thickness not necessarily height) and it’s leaking through our roof. We got a quote for 17k to take it down and rebrick it, which the guy said we have to do.

We haven’t been able to find another company for a quote but I’m still trying.

We have an old house and we’ve had to do numerous replacements / renovations in the last 2-3 years so we are a bit exhausted from all of it.

It’s a working wood burning fire, although we don’t use it much maybe once or twice a year. Can we just get rid of the chimney and cap it somehow?

Is the grass greener living close to family vs. better job opportunities?

My husband (35M) and I (30F) have been talking about potentially moving, would love to hear others experiences and even advice / opinions. We have two young kids, a baby and toddler.

We currently live 3 hours from my family, and 5 hours from his family, but 2 hours from nearest friends and 1.5 hour from work (we are both hybrid). Our house is also not big enough to host people over night or even for a party / get together.

We are interested in moving close to family and work, but these places are not the same. Our jobs are in a very HCOL city we wouldn’t move to that city, and our families live in small cities with less job opportunities, lesser pay likely (and further for our hybrid roles so not sure we could keep them).

Both our siblings have kids close to our kids age so we think being close to our kids cousins would be fun and the support from grandparents would help make our likely slightly easier.

On the other side, we still like the house we live in and it’s affordable (we bought at a good time) and it is a bit rural so the nature setting is lovely.

We could move in between work and family (1.5hr drive from both) in a medium cost of living city.

Edit: spelling
