I've been pondering this for a long time & am thinking ahead to after the midterms....
If Democrats wanna win 2028, what is their campaign message about the border & immigration at our southern border?
IMO, what happened between 2020-2024 CANNOT happen again. As "humane" as we like to view ourselves, the massive influx of immigrants south of our border was UNTENABLE & in itself NOT "humane". I advocate for indigenous people & hate the hypocrisy of saying "come here legally" but even I was shocked by the immeasurable waves of migrants.
AND it played a role in us losing big in 2024.
The GOP will lie & smear Democrats with the "open border" brush....their rallying cries will be:
"Do you want OPEN BORDERS again?!?" and "[Insert candidate name] wants OPEN BORDERS again!!"
That said, will Democrats really admit their mistake & even say, "We can keep some of Trump's border policies in place"??
On a personal level, I think the policy needs to be to keep the border shut down BUT increase LEGAL immigration & put some onus on Congress to FINALLY address immigration. I would give voice to those in the farm, hotel, restaurant & service industries that RELY on migrant workers & have been begging for changes to our laws for decades.
But that's just me & I wonder what others here think.
