Advice

Hey yall, just looking for general advice before taking the plunge and getting into iRacing. I’ve never done any sim stuff before. I’m just a NASCAR fan that’s thinking about trying it really. Just sort of daunting from an outsider, with all the different avenues and options and just understanding how the whole thing works, as well as the cost. I like other motorsports as well, but don’t pay nearly as much attention to them. I know my computer would run it, but I’ve got a standard monitor that probably wouldn’t be too good for it. Would need to get pedals and wheel.

What’s the learning curve like? How often do you think you need to play to make cost worth it? I don’t know how to drive manual, does that matter? Can you learn manual on the sim? Honestly anything you all think a newbie needs to know before diving in would be appreciated.

On the Gluckcast this week, Jeff talked about the amount of media appearances Carson has said yes to following his win this week. Which is awesome, I’m glad he’s done all of that.

I feel like the sport and its drivers just sort of consigns itself to “no one pays attention to us anymore” without even trying to get attention. He went on nascar specific platforms, on completely non-nascar specific platforms. Places you wouldn’t expect to invite the winner of a random nascar race in April on anymore.

And this just makes me wonder, how much have the other drivers for the last decade or so even been trying? Seems like he could go on places if he wanted to.

My hot take is that NASCAR needs to mandate that it’s winner every week do loads of media. Everything they can get on, they should have to do. NASCAR should play a part in reaching out to schedule them places, but they should have to do it. Every other sport requires this type of promotion from its athletes. Jeff even brought up ty Gibbs doing essentially no media after he won at Bristol. That should not be allowed, he should have to. You’re an athlete getting paid a bunch of money, you should have to do this stuff.
