As disclosed by the movie, the Backrooms were discovered, not created. The scientists have absolutely no clue how long this dimension has existed, neither its entities.

Using a caveman implies ASYNC has no idea when was the last time life inside the Backrooms interacted with humans, or if it ever did. They are resorting to the earliest records of humanity to see if something inside is able to recognize it.

It’s a direct parallel to how mammoths used to recognize and interact with humans back in the Ice Age. The scientists are trying to see if this triggers the same natural, ancient, prehistoric recognition in the entities, or if this is a first time contact.

The voices attached to the cardboard follow pretty much the same logic. The scientists are trying to understand if the entities are at least capable of recognizing some sort of basic and regional human communication, which would facilitate understanding it's origins.
