The Field update: 1,200+ registered players, teams, controller support, and free seasonal rewards

Hey everyone! It’s been about two months since I last posted about The Field, so I wanted to give an update on how things have been going and what’s been added.

For anyone who missed the original post, The Field is a 100% free-to-play browser-based first-person paintball game focused on competitive speedball. No download needed. There are optional cosmetic purchases, but you don’t need to buy anything to play. I grew up playing Digital Paintball, and that’s been a big inspiration for this project.

We’ve now passed 1,200 registered players, which is pretty wild to see. We’ve had full 5v5 games running with people waiting to jump in, and seeing players come back regularly has been one of the coolest parts of building it.

Here’s some of what’s been added:

  • Team HQ is live. You can create a team, invite players, search for teams recruiting, and assign positions within your roster.
  • Controller support. You can now use a controller for gameplay.
  • Free seasonal rewards launch tomorrow, October 4. Play games and complete challenges, like reaching a certain number of eliminations or wins, to unlock cosmetic rewards.
  • More fields and layouts. There are more options for running points, and the field selection keeps growing.
  • More customization. We’ve added more marker annos, jerseys, headgear, masks, hoppers, and tanks. The TF Strata, our new poppet-style marker, is also available.
  • Paintball brand partnerships. Gear from brands including HK Army, Tiger Wear, Stay Savage, Weltz, and Agg or Not has been added.
  • Gameplay and community features. Spectating, map voting, vote kicking, and AFK kicking, along with ongoing fixes and gameplay improvements.

We also just wrapped up a giveaway for a custom marker anno and some other goodies to celebrate the community’s growth. Thanks to everyone who entered!

I’m still building and updating this around my full-time job and family. A lot of the changes have come directly from people playing, reporting issues, and sharing ideas, so I appreciate everyone who’s been involved.

If you tried it a couple of months ago, come run some points and see how it’s coming along. If you’re new, jump in or join the Discord to find people to play with. I’d love to hear what you think, especially from other old DPB players.

I built a browser-based 5v5 speedball game—The Field is now live for alpha testing! -UPDATE

Hey everyone, Jake here. A little while ago I posted about The Field, a browser-based paintball game I’ve been working on. Several people asked me to post an update when it was ready for testing, so here it is—the alpha is officially live!

For anyone seeing it for the first time, The Field is a low-poly, first-person speedball game inspired by the Half-Life mod Digital Paintball. It’s focused on competitive 5v5 matches using NXL rules and runs directly in your browser with nothing to download.

The trailer shows some of the current gameplay, but this is still an early alpha. Expect bugs, unfinished features, balance changes, and plenty of updates as development continues. Right now, I’m looking for people who want to jump in, test the game, and help get some matches going.

You can play it here:

Please also join the Discord for testing announcements, development updates, new features, and finding other people to play with:

The game currently requires a desktop or laptop with a keyboard and mouse. I recommend using Google Chrome and enabling Fullscreen under Settings → Gameplay for the best experience.

Thanks to everyone who showed interest in the original post. I’m excited to finally let people get in and play it!

I’m building a low-poly competitive speedball game called The Field

Hey everyone, my name’s Jake. I’ve been working on a low-poly browser paintball game called The Field, based around competitive speedball and NXL-style rules. The game will be completely free to play and won’t require a download.

I’ve been playing "Digital Paintball" games for 20 years, with most of that time spent playing the Half-Life mod DPB. I’ve always wanted a modern paintball game with the same competitive feel, so I finally decided to start building my own.

One of my favorite features so far is the instant GunzUp field importer. You can import almost any GunzUp field layout into the game in under a minute. It still needs some refinement, but seeing a real layout turn into a playable field that quickly is pretty awesome.

Eliminated players actually walk off the field and return to their pits, allowing you to keep track of how many bodies are still alive. I’m also building a competitive mode with almost no UI, meaning players will need to rely on the scoreboard, communication, and what they can actually see on the field.

There’s also a lot of customization for your player and gear. Visually, the game was influenced by the simple low-poly style of BattleBit. If you’re looking for cutting-edge graphics, this probably won’t be your cup of tea. My focus is making something fun, accessible, and genuinely competitive.

There is still a TON of work to do, but the game can already run complete matches. This started as a passion project because a lot of us loved DPB but always wanted something with more modern features. I’m currently developing it solo during early mornings and late nights.

Eventually, I’d love to work with brands and people within the paintball community to see what we can create together.

Anyway, here’s the rough trailer I put together. If the game interests you, I also have a Discord where I’ll be sharing updates and eventually looking for beta testers. If you have any trouble joining, just let me know.
