Sick/vacation time etiquette

I’m pretty sure I’m going to put my two weeks in. But I have about 30 hours of sick time. How does sick time work? If I call out on a 5 hour shift, can I only use 5 hours of sick time?
I also have some vacation time accrued. Can I use this anytime?
Thanks!

Am I being pushed out?

Hi. I need some advice please about possibly filing a grievance against my store manager and what the ramifications may be.

I am a rehire who came back after almost 2 decades to earn some extra for my family of 5. This is a second job and I am available nights and weekends.

Earlier this year, an immediate family member was very ill and is going through a lot of medical treatment. They live almost 2 hours from me. I advised my manager back in feb that once we had a date for surgery I will have to limit my weekend hours in order to care for them. I apologized as I know my availability is already limited. Their response was pretty blah, as in they heard me but didn’t really say anything and only acknowledged that they heard.

I submitted my new availability on 5/22 with an effective date of 6/22. My weekday (nights only) availability remained the same but I had to cut back on weekends. I can no longer work Saturday after 4pm (which still leaves 11.5 hours available Saturdays) and unavailable on Sunday. As I said, the reason is because I have to be able to travel and stay out of state.

My manager never officially approved the new availability and the first 2 published schedules after 6/22 were within my availability. The next week I was scheduled for the exact hours on Saturday I said I am not available. When I spoke to my manager about this, he gave me some sob story about how many hours he works and his family obligations. He also then vented to another barista after getting off the phone with me about my availability and the choice I will have to make.

I feel like he is trying to constructively force me to quit. He had all that time to talk to me and voice his concerns about my availability and I would tried my hardest to find a compromise. Instead he ignored the issue until it became a problem for him. He never talked to me and deliberately put me to work a shift he knew I can’t be there for.

Do I file a grievance with HR or simply put my notice in?
