Anyone had success with Hidden Realms' "digital aerochrome" method?
In short, It's using the Sigma SD1 with a MidOpt TB550/660/850 filter, a Lee 110 Middle Pink, and a tiffen orange 16. You can read about it here: https://hiddenrealms.ch/sd1-aerochrome-again/ I use the exact same filters as are mentioned in the post, and i use the same lens as the author, the Sigma 18-50 f2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM. Since the MidOpt is very expensive and usually only sold in small sizes, the trick is to tape/glue it to the back of the lens. A 25.5mm filter is large enough for this.
As you can see, i've ended up with usable images, but my results are very inconsistent. I wasn't able to get the correct white balance in-camera, so i have to drastically correct it in post. I also find the metering to be very inconsistent, i think that might be because the camera's light meter is not sensitive to IR. The result is that the red channel clips very easily while the rest remains underexposed. The filter stack eats up a ton of light too, so shutter speeds are very slow, even in relatively bright light.
But i absolutely love the colors when things work out correctly! It's a little different from Aerochrome, with foliage being more purple than red, but i think it's a neat variation on the traditional aerochrome look. This is also much more accurate than the IR chrome as it actually does the proper color swaps. For example, the garage doors in the 2nd pic are burgundy IRL, whereas they're orange in the pic. I don't have any examples in this post but bright red becomes a bright yellow using this method, just like real aerochrome.
I'm curious if anyone else here has tried this and if they were able to get a good white balance. For what it's worth, i use a Sigma SD1 Merrill, whereas the author of the article uses the original SD1. These should be essentially the same camera, but all my struggles make me wonder if they might handle extreme custom WB's a little differently.
