It used to be a popular take that the Sonic movies should eventually "soft reboot" into animated films with no humans. Has that changed?

@archiesonicwrld theorizes that Metal Sonic's modern design was developed for Sonic 06

Most people who have heard about Metal Sonic remember classic Metal from Stardust Speedway and his upgraded modern form from Sonic Heroes. Maybe they've seen him from Knuckles' Chaotix, his playable character from the SA2B's multiplayer, his brief inclusion in Sonic 4 Episode Metal or his cameo in Sonic Generations. But depressingly what most people can’t tell you, outside of the Sonic fanbase, is his phenomenal glow up in the IDW comics.

Metal is different from characters like Knuckles and Shadow where they frequently had bad characterization before they were introduced in the films (with Shadow, his characterization was improved with the *anticipation* of him being in Sonic 3).

But Metal Sonic has been incredible for almost a decade. Every single comic appearance is gold. His personality, his motives, his new powers, his explanations of his past defeats and how they messed with him psychologically; he is an *unbelievable* character, easily one of the top 5 best written of the series. But like most fans know at this point, if you just play the games, you wouldn’t know this.

it’s likely that the creators of Sonic 4 are going to draw heavily from the most popular sources, the games and the OVA, but none of that have the awesome development that Metal has had that most fans know. Metal Sonic has already been fixed, but I’m concerned that they’re not gonna have his fixed elements in the film.

Is that too much to be concerned about? Are they going to bring some people to the team who are familiar with his IDW characterization and incorporate that or do you think they’re going to take his character a different way that’s just as interesting?
